How to remove XBX2 PWM heatsinks?
Well I just got my Ultra-X in, went to install it, and of course it doesn't fit The heatpipes interfere with the back 2 PWM heatsinks, thus I need to find a way to remove them. From the looks of it the heatsinks are actually permanantly installed with pins which are soldered through the back of the motherboard. I dug out my soldering iron but I can't seem to get it hot enough to desolder the pins, ugh. Is there any other way to get these damned heatsinks off? I gotta get my compy back up and running tonight!
Thx in advance.

Dremel is bad news when it comes to something attached to the motherboard as all it takes is one loose shaving in the wrong place to have yourself a nice fried mobo.
I ended up just installing the heatsink backwards, it's pushing against the back panel of my mobo tray but at least it's installed!

Yup that's how I had to install mine, I hate it like that but I guess it will work!
It's a great cooler though, far superior to that crap I was using before.

I was using a Zalman CNPS 9700 NT...
And as expected with this heatsink mounted the way it is, it COMPLETELY screws up the airflow pattern in my case. With the side panel off this cooler does approx 10*c less than the Zalman, very impressive. However, the second I put on my side panel it jumps to about 10* higher than the Zalman. *sigh*. I just can't win!

Welllllll.... Good and bad really. I love that fact that i don't have to constantly worry about condensation or any of my hardware dieing, and yet I hate the fact that I have a gold CPU that would probably be super beast under the Vapo.
On a side note, I switched my rear 120 to be an an intake fan and that has helped considerably. Idle is about 36*c and load is about 53*c @ 1.35 with the side panel in place. Much better than 52*c idle and 74*c load with the side panel on with the old fan configuration! And mind you this is with a 1200 RPM fan compared to the 2500RPM fan that it ships with (max 38.5db compared to the S-FLEX that I put on it @ max 20.1db). I think this cooler would be ultra-beast with the higher speed fan, but I'm trying to stick with quietness on this build.
A few pix....
Now this is what I call an amazing factory mirror finish!
Some different angle shots of how this cooler fits on an XBX2, not very nicely as u can make out.

How about removing that back fan altogether? I would think it being that close pushing or pulling is messing up the airflow of the heatsink.

Frag slap some thermal paste on the heatpipes under the black heatsink, you will see the temps drop another couple degrees. Theres a huge airgap with that heatsink.

What paste did you use? The Coolabs liquid metal? Or is that too runny?

What if you mount the black exhaust fan, from the outside in. it would give a little more space for air to move freely.
(Sorry for my bad english)
Victor.

I was thinking the exact same thing, either remove it and test or move it outside.

Im redoing the heatsink tonight, with CoolLab Liquid Pro, and sealing off the ends with AS5 so it doesnt leak all over. Will see if I get anything different, also lapping my processor.

I suspect you might actually have a degree or two hotter because that heatsink may now hold the heat at the CPU.

Wow that's a friggin' awesome idea, so simple that I completely overlooked it, muahaha! I shall implement this tomorrow when I get home from my parents house.
Thanks for the suggestion, that will be awesome mefinks!
@Chaos: I'll be awaiting your results from adding TIM under the aluminum sink before I go ahead with it... The cooler seems to be working good enough for me as it is, I'm almost considering slapping the high speed Delta that came with it back on just to see what kinds of temps it can pull with a higher power fan, I bet it really rocks.
/me imagines the crazy cooling power of this baby with a 200cfm delta strapped to its back

i would just flip the rear fan around and make an air duct attaching rear fan to CPU fan, that way you just draw cool outside air.

Another good suggestion, I've already flipped the rear fan around to be an intake fan and that's dropped the temps about 20*c alone, an air duct would probably help even more. I'll have to devise a strategy for that, thanks for the suggestion.
