8800GTS 320MB Pencil Voltage Mods


8800GTS 320MB, one of the cheapest Direct X 10 capable cards around, fresh from oven. You want more overclocking headroom? A bit more voltage may help would you think? Ok then let's go.

*Take Note that all physical Modifications Void your warranty!*

First right at the back of the Graphics Card, you can measure the voltage of the GPU core and the voltage olf the GDDR3 Memory. Use your multimeter to measure at the points marked below.




Default VGPU is 1.29v and default Memory voltage is 1.86v.

For Memory voltage, you can either choose to use a simple pencil to increase the voltage or use a variable resistor to connect to the leg of the IC chip shown below for more precise tuning.






You can pencil the resistor marked above carefully to increase GPU Core Voltage, or for better precision, you can solder a 20K ohms Variable Resistor to the spot marked and hook the other leg to any grounded spot. Set VR at Maximum Resistance and tune down resistance to increase voltage. Original resistance of resistor is 538ohms, reducing resistance by 10ohms will increase voltage by 0.05v.






Unfortunately for GPU core voltage, due to the small resistance of the resistor, it is quite impossible to tune voltage with a pencil mod. You will need to solder a 500 ohms Variable Resistor to the spot marked and hook the other leg to any grounded spot. Set VR at Maximum Resistance and tune down resistance to increase voltage.

Ok, so you got this at your fingertips, simple stuff really, now just dump plenty of cooling onto the card and I'm quite sure you will see a substantial increase in overclocks. Eventually, this card is modified the exact same way as the original 8800GTS 640MB.

how high were you able to take the vGPU out while still on stock cooling?

Would this help in closing the performance gap with the 640MB model at high resolutions w/ AA enabled or are things definitely more memory related at that point? It would be great to do some light modding and get near 640MB performance for less.

Clocks and benchs w/ OC and mod in place would be great.

those mod's are clean and ease. Take your pencil and go on Cousin.

I recently got an x1950xt 512mb from newegg for 300 but they listed it as 625/900 when its actually 625/800. They offered a refund so I was thinking of getting one of these, probably the evga version.

Would it be worth it to lose the 198 mb of vram?
