Seagate may buy OCZ!

seagate buying anyone is not good, look at the quality of mechanical "samsung drives" over the last year. ocz was basically dead to me with the sandforce controller and i was looking at the new indi controller as something that i could get behind but under seagates name i will have no of it.

Are the new Seagate / F3's really that bad?
I put one of the more recent 500GB Seagate drives in my girlfriend's build, has been running strong for upwards of a year now.

I have had 2 WD drives fail, one Blue and even one Black, which internally is equal to an RE drive.

The last HDD I bought was a Hitatchi DeathStar, haven't had any death yet.

You'd be surprised - OCZ's enterprise market is extremely successful.

Lots make the mistake of thinking Sandforce issues = Ocz's fault...couldn't be further from the truth.

Why buy Ocz? Umm...cuz they make, sell and offer more SSDs than anyone else afaik. I bet that Seagate got a good inside look at the upcoming Indilinx Barefoot 3 as well. The enterprise related capabilities are gonna be very substantial as well.

Why not? OCZ make their own SSD controllers these days, sure if you paid them enough they would probably allow you to use their controllers in your SSDs, but that doesn't get you the Knowledge, established R&D Team, Patents and so on, plus OCZ is still a relatively "cheap" company to buy compared to some of the other companies that have SSD Controllers like for example Micron.

I have an Intel Sandforce and it kicks some serious ass. Same performance as all the other Sandforce drives out there with none of their problems. Let's hope it stays like this.

Seagate desktop drives are pretty good in my experience. Similar with their laptop drives.
WD makes good desktop drives. I won't touch their laptop drives however, pieces of junk always going bad.
Hitachi is the general opposite of WD. Can't make a desktop drive worth anything, but their laptop drives are pretty decent.

This is all my experience and working in the field with these various drives all the time.

I've never cared for OCZ stuff (too many QC issues in the past from everything I have come across) so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out IF they do this.

but ocz has a nice RMA department now, and the psus are ok for low wattage units.

i do not know about the f3 other than they are slower, but the f4eg is crap now for speed and reliability,

they have been shipping slower drives and the 5400rpm have been less reliable, most of the time when 5400rpm drives are not reliable it is from using failed 7200rpm drives. seagate was known to have done with the 5900rpm line so doing it with samsung drives should be what is going on.

That's another way Seagate could improve Ocz...I'm sure they have massive validating, testing and QC resources compared to Ocz

Actually Intel's 520 SandForce firmware + the use of cherry picked 25nm synch nand = the fastest SF2281 based drives and even beats a lot of SF + Toggle drives. Afaik Intel is the only outside entity ever allowed inside SF's firmware and they rewrote the fw with SF's assistance. Intel got to keep it's 'secret sauce' part for itself but shared the stability/compatibility fixes.

Just saying, OCZ is currently probably the tastiest target for a takeover if it comes to SSDs.

The only actual value that OCZ has, is (what's left of) the Indilinx team.
But who knows, the CEO is definitely a 'sales guy'- maybe he can talk up his company to some potential buyer.
