    Galaxy Non-reference GTX285 2GB Benchmarked

We have already introduced Galaxy’s non-reference GTX285 last week, and the reseachers from Galaxy have tried out a different cooler on it.

This custom cooler employs two big fans with diameter of 100mm to ensure enough air flow and to reduce the noise efficiently. The cooler claims to be able to reduce the noise by more than 20dB compared with reference sample. As we can see, the cooler is put close to the right side of PCB, which is designed to enhance the cooling for power supply part.

Featuring the third-party chip to support DisplayPort, this card also offers DVI and S-Video connectivity. The GDDR3 memory chips carry the model number H5RS1H23MFR-N2C which are specified to run at 1200 MHz. Instead of 16MX32bit on most GTX285, Galaxy has chosen 32MX32bit to form memory size of 2GB.

However, the final edition will feature Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme cooler.

So.. it doesn't do anything at 1920x1200. I wish they had tested at 2560x1600 with single and SLI setups. I believe at that resolution with SLI, it would have helped considerably. Good to see consumers don't need to worry about 1GB being insufficient with current game engines.

As you can see there is no real performance gain. It makes sense because those games even with high AA and AF does not fill up the frame buffer big enough to reach 1gb..

company of heros and WIC have some decent gains. i bet at 2560x1600 the 2gb will have a pretty big difference.

Im surprised to see Crysis/far Cry 2 dont show any significant gains though, I always thought they ate graphics memory for breakfast

Anyhow, as others said, I think they should have tested with a slightly higher resolution. Although I think not a lot of people make use of that compared to any other resolution, a non-ref card with twice the bandwith doesnt have mainstream written all over it either, high-res is a niche market in a certain way which requires special cards, IMO.

RAM is nothing but memory addresses for the GPU. If it can address 2GBs there is no "efficiency issues".

I don't see that much of an improvement from 1Gb to 2Gb.
A 2560x1600 resolution benchmark would've have been good to compare.

Not sure why they were testing 1920*1200. Clearly, 1GB is enough for that resolution.

Who cares about these. I would like to see a GTX 296+ with higher binned GPUs (read higher frequencies) and with 2x512bit buses and 2x2GB frame buffers. I wonder how it will affect micro-stuttering when playing in 2560x resolution with max AA and AF.

the the difference in amount of memory used from 1920x1200-2560x1600 wont be much but it may be enough to tip it over 1g and start showing a difference in some games
for example stalker uses ~600m gpu mem at 1280x1024 and it uses ~630m at 1920x1200 but i have noticed other games scale differently
i tested coh to use ~750m at 1920x1200 4xaa dx9 so in dx10 with 16xaa it could well be over 1g

im really looking forward to games making full use of 2g gpu mem and with both nvidia and ati releasing high end 2g cards we should be on the way

why is GTA IV use so much ram I mean it's fine on pooey consoles, bad port? or did they do a nice port and made everything fancier?

and As I thought still need BIG res to actually make a diff :/

    edit.-

    -just noticed-
In the pic, there using DVI to HDMI.... just wondering if that could do anythign to the results bar a bit of latency??

It's not like FRAPS etc. would monitor what happens in the monitor.

thats all i needed to see.. clearly/definitely 2gb offers more than 1gb.. even at 1920 which im at

once more games/benches supports 2gb better.. bigger diff

2gb 285 should be available right this moment in the usa.. why isnt it ?!?!?!

@ mods.. whomever rates 2gb 285 threads with one star should get a week ban!!!

2560x1600 is almost twice the number of pixels as 1920x1200.

Depending on texture compression algorithms and texture map sizes there may not be a huge difference between 1gb and 2gb cards.. would be interesting to see a 1gb 4870 vs 1gb 4850 at matching clocks along side some 1gb vs 2gb results though to see if memory bandwidth is causing issues for some things.

All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.
