Intel to push SSDs with Montevina - Hexus.net

    http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=13459

Intel's Troy Winslow has recently stated that Intel's SSDs will surpass the read and write speeds of current solid-state products from the likes of Samsung. To the delight of all those wanting an SSD in their system, Winslow added that Intel's SSD offerings should see 50 per cent price drops in both 2009 and 2010.

Still not good enough,a 64 GB SSD is ~1.5k a 50% price drop would put it to 750$ and another 50% to 325$ for only 64 gigs....

    Yay, SSD price drop

The price of reliability is the pursuit of the utmost simplicity. It is a price which the very rich find most hard to pay.

I'm holding out for SSD until the price becomes more reasonable. I'd like to know what speeds these Intel SSD really do go at. My Raptors will do until 2009.

    WRC,
You know, you could avoid the trouble to scan for viruses if you didn't click all those pr0n banners.
You were not supposed to see this.

And I use Linux for pr0n, obviously. That's why I installed it the first time, to surf pr0n sites with no danger.

No. Some 60% of virusses don't get caught. Nowadays they don't ruin your comp or delete files, instead, they gather data and some of them slave your computer/connection to a botnet.

...and you can never know if you have one or not, as they try to keep low profile. And once you get one, you can't get rid of them without reinstalling windows.

Virus scanners are useless against them.

LOL. It's empowering to tell Windows to fck off when it pops up, "Hey, um, I know we're not on good terms, but, you should get some antivirus software...I'm feeling vulnerable..."

On a side note, if you complain about your AV, perhaps you should get a better AV product

Antivirus is good to protect against minor annoyances,

    Ontopic:

Im gonna love seeing Intel and Samsung duck it out on the SSD market. Both are big companys, its not like the small "skirmishes" with AMD

You do know the people who make viruses also have access to the anti-virus software you do. Before releasing a virus they'll test it out on all of the major anti-virus software to make sure it bypasses them all.
I for one support the idea that AV is for noobs. Don't need anything more than an updated Spybot Search & Destroy to get rid of most problems and if a new virus is out it's probably going to go right past your AV like it wasn't there.
Rather than having an AV slowing my computer down I prefer to backup my important stuff and in case anything happens... just format and reinstall.

    Generalizations are, in general, wrong.

No guys don't get me wrong.
I didn't mean to dis him or hiss statement or any other bad connotation.
I just found its context funny. This being XS and all I guess a lot of folks use more xtreme measures against those pesky bugs.
Hence the statement "Antivirus is for n00bs" characterizes XS well!

i also nvr had a virus but i stil use an AV and always keep it up to date.

Pretty much for the same reason why i always use a condom, the chances that something goes wrong is small but when stuff goes wrong ur in deep .

Besides that 50% price drop aint enough we need some stiff competition on prices and read and write speeds and the prices on decent SSDs will drop.

Not to get OT, but not having virus/rootkit/spyware/adware software is lunacy!
Just because you don't "get" a virus dosen't mean you don't have one, many arrive by stealth without you knowing it.

Yes totaly agree, I've had virus's a few times, but it's nothing a reformat+reinstal won't cure, plus the os runs fastest after a fresh instal giving better results, this will be better with faster drives making the whole process a breeze.

I hope that Intel's offering is indeed faster, but 2009/10 seems a long way away for prices to drop.
