It would be ignorante to think Caymen shaders don't perform better than Cypress shaders. Shader counts alone don't tell the whole story. That said, 30-40% more performance than a 5870 with a lower shader count and similar power evelope is quite impressive if the case, those are some respectable optimizations no matter how you look at it.

if you want to remember something, remember this: 3dfx went bankrupt because it failed to deliver competitive products for multiple product cycles in a row. failure to execute. period.

3dfx was the first company to say you should be playing at 60fps, not 30fps.

They executed just their strategy just fine. It was the wrong way for them to go, what they did was cling their proprietary glide and did not want to fully support standards like opengl. Yes they failed to compete with Nvidia, who supported opengl. Nvidia is doing this with Cuda and physX. On the hardware side they clung old tech and just started adding more chips to it. It's not a failure to execute it was a failure to innovate and meet customer's demands.

As for the whole 30/60 fps thing ... The details don't matter much anymore they're dead.

Doubt it's the same power envelope - getting that much performance in the same node is next to impossible.

But yeah, a 30-40% jump within the same process on a die supposedly only 15% larger is a pretty impressive feat of engineering, especially if its being compared to a die 25% larger than itself

Except NV is one of the founders of Khronos group, that is behind OpenCL and they were also the first to start supporting OpenCL physics Bullet engine.

The slides look real to me, but of course they could be fakes from AMD. Obviously they've been shopped to remove the embargo dates and to add all those dozen or so watermarks (seriously wtf).

If the 6970 performance ends up between 570 and 580 like the slides say I do expect the price to be under 400$. And obviously 6950 would be around 300$ so all of the cards would be in their own price ranges which would end up slowing price competition, something that both camps probably want. The price listings we've seen probably aren't the real deal but guesswork.

It's not necessarily wise for AMD to try to make a faster single gpu if it means making the die too large and expensive. As it has been said many times, even by Nvidia, ultimately it's about perf/mm^2 and perf/W and that will decide the best card. For customer's point of view it's of course perf/price and features that matter, but even Nvidia can't keep on selling gpus that are twice as expensive to manufacture at the same price level as the competition.

I would be very disappointed if you are dissapointed since al the rumours are so dissapointing

depending on situation both 6970/6950 are on par with their competitors sometimes one being faster than other one .... this is pretty much official

That may very well be the box of my next card ... except i doubt it will have HIS written on it

So i guess it's confirmed then that the 6950 will have 2GB of memory. Unless there's two versions, which i doubt.

Cayman will bring big improvement in front-end and that cost silicon. Shaders are just maintained at a level allowing AMD to be no slower than Cypress, but gaming performance gains will come from other major changes.

You can draw analogy between Core2Duo and i7. The execution units are just slightly modified but all the performance gains are coming from impressive front-end and un-core of CPU.

I'm expecting quite a big advantage for Cayman over Cypress in some tests. Of course this will not translate to every possible scenario, but I'm happy with that

All their boxes from the HD58xx series have similar theme.
Even their 6870 and 6850 are similar.
One of the best minimalistic packaging I have seen in the industry. Looks great
Usually box this size wont even fit 5 cards properly, HIS managed to fit 10 cards in there :P
