Cool TWKR + Gigabyte 790FXT-UD5P Socket Mod

In all the hustle and bustle of K|ngp|n and Shamino's Vantage bonanza we nearly forgot about the AMD AM3 parts that were hauled to the event. After a midnight dinner we prepared the Gigabyte 790FXT-UD5P for a quick and dirty run with the last 7 liters of LN2 of the night.

Gautam prepared/battled with the OS that had been on a Classified, Rampage II Extreme, and then the Gigabyte 790FXT-UD5P, I prepared the insulation, and Vapor had the magic touch.

First a little 3D06, it has a bum core holding it back.

    All 4 cores

And then the real fun began with commentary as close as possible to what occurred.

Me: Eric, can you hold the board, I need to twist off the pot.
Eric: Pulling the pot off at -192 Celsius?
Me: Yeah, I do it all the time.

    *crack*

Shamino is examining the destroyed socket, not sure if he can solder and hot-glue it back together.

Look at that insulation job, zero condensation between the board and the eraser. 3oh6 would be proud

I do believe this is an AMD world record, first motherboard socket ripped in half at -192C.

Turns out I did it 1 too many times

Huge props to everyone for everything, was a great weekend Now to see if I can RMA this board

How efficient is that board Gom? Do you think it will compete vs Crosshair iii?

Tough question. I prefer the Crosshair III due to it having keyboard based Tweak-It, crucial for high CPU clocks through 3D06. The Gigabyte is cheap and stable though, a proven board

I wish we had caught it on video, the looks on our faces when the socket wasn't there as I pulled up the pot was classic.

Shamino eyeballed it, he was shaking his head which I think means "not good"

Wait a sec, are the CPU pins still stuck in the portion of the socket that's attached to the mobo?

Nope, those are the socket pins that are pushed against the CPU pins when you lock in the little handle on the socket. No CPU pins were damaged.

But TWKR can do more, have seen it ;P
Also, unlucky about the board, sounds pretty funny though,

It was a good quick and dirty run with 6l of LN2 so we could go home and get some sleep

Was really trippy to see a socket detroyed like that. When Chris pulled the pot up we all heard the crack and went on alert but it still took us a few silent seconds to figure out just what broke when we first saw it

Maybe next time we shouldn't use that awesome TIM and Gom should twist the pot a little more before yanking it off

That was just our latest victim though, the day had its share of clumsiness and accidents for sure

It's been quite a while since something cracked me up this much. (no pun intended) Prior to gomeler's destructive twist and Vapor's touch of death, the UD5P clocked great. It was really fun pushing the AMD chip to such high speeds, and at such low temperatures. EasyTune 6 worked like a charm too, very luckily since we were using a Server 2008 OS that didn't allow AOD to install.

I've got a feeling though that Shamino will have it good as new in no time.

LOL crazy.. with the smaller sized versions of that photo, i thought it was an actual AMD cpu that was ripped in half ! So it was only the socket heh
