Thanks for the suggestion and tips on NoScript. That and AdBlocker plus did the trick. I suggest doing the same if you want to bypass it as much as possible.

and never see another annoying ad generated delay or ad again.

adjuggler is the offender of all the annoying ads. netfirm is the ad at the bottom of the forum , and is not bad at all.

I don't mean this as a personal criticism, because I know this is a spare-time hobby and Fugger & Co. have no obligation to keep the community running, but seriously - the number of times XS has gone down, or changes that should have been tested on a dev server have buggered something up for everyone and caused massive issues (a la the ad situation), is absolutely inordinate and creates a bad impression to those who might not be here long-term.

I'm sure many folks here would be willing to help out as far as fixing stuff on the code/software side of things goes - perhaps we should be making more use of our community resources here?

Finally, it'd be great if we could get some kind of an official response here, even if it is just "Sorry guys, we buggered things up, our bad, this isn't new XS policy, we're working to fix it".
unfortunately i have to agree

especially at the testing on a production system. smth like that has to be done in a test environment.

however, this is not the first time we have that much issues with ads. we had exactly the same issue a year (?) ago. it started with "normal" ads as well and ended in the same scam/spam, yelling ads we have now. there even were the exact same problems with the forum table layout being randomly destroyed by the ad on the right (which often makes the forum to only use 50-75% of the available space...).

back then there also was a lot of stir and complaints as well. so i really don't know why we have to go through this yet again...

granted, i use adblockplus and noscript ever since anyways, but people who actually see the ads might be deterred by these dubious ads (like the "you're the 2389562395623th visitor, cklick here to claim your win!" or "click here to win xyz"). these ads are usually found on sites i don't even bother to visit...

Oh, come on. Most of us here are either HS/College students or adults who at least have the money. Why is it the time to talk about unemployment?

I don't mind the "Get Ripped" ads

But, just a word of warning - the Dazzle teeth whitener and other similar ads are scams, so don't be tempted.

Ive got this BS as well. I know I could go back to FF and get rid of the ads but still. Ill give up XS before I give up Chrome. I can handle ads placed along the top, side and bottom as long as they do not interfere with the forum. But the above is just pure BS. XS isnt part of the gamespy network now is it?

XS used to be a wonderful place, 2009 has just been downhill between the downtime earlier in the year, invasive ads and the crossforum wars its getting unbearable.

I Agree XS was such a good community and now its just one thing after another this year, lets censor Bitspower again, it has been a bad year for this forum I spend most of my time on Hardware Cannucks now
Atleast their forum is well laid out fast and reliable I also check several other forums including XS but I have been checking this thread to see if the admins would comment, Fugger is probably behind this but they havent even commented like oh they will be gone soon, it was a mistake on our part, making XS look like some cheap porn site.
However nothing yet.

"our part"?

None of us admins have any control over anything with regards to this, and trust me, we hate it as much as everyone else. All I can say is use adblock plus or similar, I know I am.

+1

I'm advocating people use adblockers and/or web filtering. I use both. I use AdBlock because I'm not always on my home network and because it helps with my battery life....and I use web filtering so that I never see the crap when I'm at my apartment, regardless of the computer I'm on.

Web filtering at the DNS server will prevent ads from being shown on any browser on any OS (I don't even see ads on my iPhone when on my apartment's wifi). I originally used OpenDNS because Comcast's DNS server sucks and cuts out too often, but turns out it's great at web filtering (if you setup a profile, it's free and they don't bug you). If you do go this route, make sure to check the "Adware" and "Phishing" checkboxes on the filtering settings page

It's really great not seeing these ads--I know I'd be pissed as if I had to see/hear them.

BababooeyHTJ,no problem.

even using these adblockers and stuff
we still have this page size and layout
to put up with.is this due to the ads?
is the forum going to continue being
choppy and out of whack for good?
really is hard having to scroll to the
right to change pages.

Guys, I don't really think you should blame XS for this kind of ads. As far as you know, XS is free to join, with people often giving out donations, and it DOES cost a lot to maintain this community to the level. I don't think we should take this privilage as granted. XS is a wonderful community, and it always will be. Don't let those ads spoil the fun that you can have at XS.

I am actually thrilled to have a few Gigabyte, Crucial, Adobe, and those other tech-related ads on the site, but those scam/random websites (free Wii, Walmart, get ripped, white teeth, and ESPECIALLY EVONY) ads must be gone. It is not nice to see XS looking as a cheap, pointless site.
