Hell hath frozen over! Movieman is on LINUX!

Yes, had to take double my blood pressure meds before I tried this one today!
Right now the dualie E5-2697 24 core is on Linux Mint on WCG and running WU in LESS than 1/2 the time it was on Windows.
This may actually pop 300,000WCG points a day!

Now all I need is to get my email working on this machine!

Just use Thunderbird for your mail. It's as easy as any other application and should be close enough for you to work out as you go. The principles are all the same.

This is mostly for you: Remember when you said 'We might have our first 300,000 WCG PPD machine.
Well, I'm sorry to say you were wrong, very wrong.
I just went to my WCG page and did some math with the 9 pages of completed WU to get an idea of what I was going to get per day.
    300,000? Nope, not at all
I am claiming at a rate of 407,754 WCG PPD my friend or 58,250 BOINC PPD and yes, i checked my math twice!

Not wanting to pee on your strawberries but the variance in work units and the way faah can't make its mind up about the rate each machine claims at will mean it likely won't stay at that level. I hope it does but I think it will settle nearer the 300,000 mark..... remember, better than twice as powerful as mine, or, equal or better than my two which averaged about 280,000 between them over the last 10 days including those days where you saw FAHV on windows claiming 10 pts per hour.

I'm going to guess average for you at 330,000 or around 47K Boinc and hope you are right and I am wrong

It is going to Make an interesting top hosts page for a while ....or should I call it the Dave duallie vs the 80 core rigs page

Oh, and take your hands out of your pockets when counting.... (<<< that has changed... horrid, should be )

My friend, whatever is does I'll be happy with and if it gets that 400K and knocks off that 80 thread rig I will have made my point to many:
That a reasonably overclocked dualie can compete at the top levels at 1/3'rd the price..
Of course I'll also enjoy the bragging rights!

I thought there might be some issues with editing crontab. It usually defaults to using vi as the editor, and while that's an incredibly powerful tool, there's a steep learning curve. For my purposes I prefer to use nano. It's not remotely as powerful as vi but quicker to get your head around for simple stuff.

Thanks Dave. Now I gotta overclock my rigs to keep the rooms warm enough! If I didn't game and have so many copies of Win 7, I'd run Linux too. Congrats on the additional output.

Well ... you could always run Linux on your farm machines for the points and just keep Windows on your gaming rig.

They say 'One picture is worth 1000 words" but since I tend to be a little "longwinded" here's two pics..
Eleven hours from starting from scratch and just broke 10,000 BOINC points and oh, there's another 15 pages of "Pending validation".
This thing is impressing me so much I couldn't sleep and got up an hour ago just to check the numbers!

Anyone in their 60's willing to give Linux a go for more than web browsing gets my respect.

Have been impressed with OCs increasing command of the Penguin but he is still a young pup.

You talkin' about me? Not many folk use my name and the word young in the same sentence any more.
