    PS3 Slim won't run Linux !!!!!

"..........re, the „new and improved“ console lacks Linux support, as Sony is trying to „standardize“ their OS.........."

My friend had a PS3 running linux and i loved what you could do with the cell. But this is a no linux support in their new slim PS3 is totally not cool

I dont really know why sony did this but i do hope they have a good reason. Also IMO the original PS3 was better in looks, style and OS support. The new slim looks like a cheap chinese copy of the PS3 than a real PS3

I do hope sony does something about linux also Slim PS3 will not work with ur old PS2 dvd's

Might be off topic, but how fast did Linux work on PS3?

My non-slim PS3 never worked with PS2 titles. The PS2 can be had for £99, if you're that desperate, assuming you didn't already HAVE a PS2 in the first place. I don't get the big deal with PS3 Linux anyway, afterall, most of the hardware is still locked away (Direct access) by sony, so you can't really DO much with it.

    Main Rig

    Intel Core i7-2600K (SLB8W, E0 Stepping) @ 4.6Ghz (4.6x100), Corsair H80i AIO Cooler
    MSI Z77A GD-65 Gaming (MS-7551), v25 BIOS
    Kingston HyperX 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-19200 Kit (HX24C11BRK2/16-OC) @ 1.5v, 11-13-13-30 Timings (1:8 Ratio)
    8GB MSI Radeon R9 390X (1080 Mhz Core, 6000 Mhz Memory)
NZXT H440 Case with NZXT Hue+ Installed
    24" Dell U2412HM (1920x1200, e-IPS panel)
    1 x 500GB Samsung 850 EVO (Boot & Install)
1 x 2Tb Hitachi 7K2000 in External Enclosure (Scratch Disk)

    Entertainment Setup

    Samsung Series 6 37" 1080p TV
Gigabyte GA-J1800N-D2H based media PC, Mini ITX Case, Blu-Ray Drive
    Netgear ReadyNAS104 w/4x2TB Toshiba DTACA200's for 5.8TB Volume size

I dont really care about the PS2 games but i do care for linux. We wrote quite a few homebrew programs and just loved what the cell can handle the gpu is locked away not the cpu.

Also in pure cpu related tasks the linux+ps3 would out perform even a i7+linux well in some of them. Linux ran quite good you can attach full keyboard and mouse also.

Lame. Running Linux on the PS3 Slim would result in a small but powerful machine...

With people making mini-super computers out of ps3 clusters, you'd think this would be a feature they would keep.

I don't really understand what the gain is for Sony with this move. I understand the idea of standardizing your OS to assure performance, but I think stating "If you put Linux on it yourself, we don't guarantee results" is fair. Maybe they were tired of getting RMA's from people who borked something on a linux install?

But yeah, I would have thought they actually sold more PS3's FOR linux than they would have gotten in RMA's from people who screwed it up somehow...

+1 to MarlboroMan - It surely will be hacked.

it does look cheap, i agree on that... and it still costs too much imo...
but linux support... does that really matter?
i think they blocked it cause too many universities are using ps3 clusters cause they are cheaper than propper servers as sony basically subsidizes the hardware?

Well didn't sony sell of their rights to that cell processor? Maybe they get cheaper cell cpus in their new ps3 slim, at a reduced cost, if they don't enable linux to run on them. This way you gotta buy those actual blade servers that use the cell, which probably cost a lot more.

Sony did something similar with their laptops. they disable VT on them so you can't run vmware, so they can buy the cpus from intel at a reduced cost. at least that is the reasoning i read about sony not giving the option to enable VT in the bioses of their laptops.

edit: and I highly doubt it will be hacked. Nothing on the original PS3 was ever hacked. Everything that installs needs to be signed by Sony.

edit2: yep, I knew they sold their rights to the Cell cpu after helping devolop it. http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/18/s...ll-to-toshiba/

Dumb move. Pretty certain the people buying PS3s for research purposes are the only reason the PS3 has any sort of foothold. Everyone else bought Xbox 360s

Let's not turn this into an Xbox vs Playstation thread. You're asking for trouble....

I'd have to say that's a bit hypocritical of you with your previous response.

On topic though. From my understanding, this was just Sony removing it's support documents. You can still install Linux, you're just totally on your own with it. I'll have to reread some articles to make sure though.
Edit: Just went through some quickly and it's mixed. Some claim that you'll still be able to, just don't expect Sony to help you any, while others are saying it's downright removed. Guess we'll have to wait for an official word, and no I don't consider fudzilla official.

No, not really. I didn't endorse or recommend the Xbox. I just agreed with Gomeler's statement. All of the consoles are enjoyable.

Actually the PS3+Linux was quite a powerful machine. We wrote several homebrew programs also one of them was based on SIGL.

no, these people cost sony money as these people buy few if any games and sony looses money on each console sale.

sony makes money on the consoles hardware (they started back when they made the 1st redesighn)

i think that they changed the memory interface with the cell redesign, so linux wont run on it, its like with the psp they use some for of direct addressing so the kernel wont work. its going around that sony did some hardware changes and did not just shrink the cell

Exactly xlink - the attach rate for games (and peripherals) for people who buy for HPC will be practically zero. However I really don't think HPC on Cell is that popular, and certainly not enough to put a major dent in Sony's profits. I think the negative publicity will do them more harm
