Elan Microelectronics Demands to Ban Sales of Nearly All Apple Products.

Elan Microelectronics Corp. this week announced that it had filed a complaint in the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) against Apple. Elan believes that numerous products by Apple infringe its patents and demands ITC to ban sales of nearly all products by the company. The lawsuit from the specialist in various screen technologies comes just weeks after Apple sued HTC for patent infringement.

Not like Apple is any different... they will sue you if they have anything remotely close to an apple in your logo... hell, I'm pretty sure they have pears too.

indeed, but theres nothing like a lurking nobody coming out of the woodworks to claim falsely what isnt theres. With apple you typically know the knockoffs had it coming.

I bet Job's attitude won't change even after this, though.

Yeah, because a college/university in BC with an apple in front of a mountain is really a knock-off.... Apple is also suing HTC and Nokia IIRC.

that would suck it would add a tax of $10-20 for anything with multi touch even though they have a vary vague patent that just talks about distinguishing fingers on a screen, its nothing about how to use it or what to do with it, just detecting 2 fingers on a screen

    That's the idea.

Look up the early patents for airplane and flight...look up the Wright Brothers patent lawsuits. You need to make it as vague, broad and sweeping as possible, yet just enough to get your patent approved.

I'd probably say this is a frivolous lawsuit under normal circumstances, but with Apple trying to claim they invented multi-touch on mobile devices, maybe they are getting a bit of "what goes around comes around."

but it sets a bad precedent for the entire industry as if apple falls then HTC, samsung, sony, moto, MS and nintendo (if the new gba follows the rumors) will all get the same suit and they did nothing for the patent. so while i would like to see apple get its just desserts, especially on multi touch, it will hurt everyone.

In an ideal world, Apple would lose but everyone else (including them from that point) would get to use multitouch unobstructed. Software patents are mostly fail wrapped in fail sprinkled with fail and sautéed in a light fail sauce.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

Same for the ridiculous "i" letter, yeah. Oh, they also invented tablets.
