So, let's take a look at the actual prices.

    i7 920 - $288.99

    Xeon W3520 - $309.99

    Xeon X5550 - $999.99

The X5550 has a lower 95W TDP and a faster 6.4GT/sec QPI and it can operate in dual socket mobo of course. The other specs are the same. 2.66GHz, 8MB L3, etc.

So I think that these new X series Xeons will be rather expensive "toys"...

Yup, it should be very similar to the 65-45nm C2Q transition but I still expect that the 920 will remain the dominant model for sometime ( eg although people have Q9550s, the Q6600 still outsold them by far )

My question is will be we needing next generation x58 boards to make the most of these. The power reduction and lower temps are awesome but if we are limited at the board from the get go, there isn't much in the way incentive.

WOW! Thanks, I can't wait to buy one of these new toys.

You seem like a smart lade so why do you think they charge more for X5550? Here's a hint Amd does it too.

I want a mainstream 32nm 6 core that is priced right. I don't really want to pay $1000 for a CPU. Hoping Intel will release one shortly after.

^ Doesn't intel have only currently one fab that can do 32nm and a few more will come online in around mid 2010? I would assume we would see cheaper version come out when other fab's are done with transition to 32nm, if that's the case.

There aren't even any non-Xeon processors AFAIK. If they aren't doing enthusiast products, they definitely isn't going to be a mainstream 32nm.

New i3 and i5 are coming up, and they are 32nm for LGA1156. What we need is an i7 quad core with 32nm

We have only one fab on 32nm. It takes time to ramp a fab on a new node so the decision was made to switch to 32nm on higher margin parts, preferably server and enthusiast and while some of those chips will have to be binned down they will still not be introduced since there would only be relatively only a few to do so. Our mega fabs in AZ and NM will be up soon enough and we will transition the rest of our chips to the 32nm node.

    Bummer.
I was really hoping for a lower clocked W3xxx.

Good to know, man. I knew that at some point mainstream parts would be released on 32nm, it's just a matter of time. I'm really interested in this, cause I got a bad batch 920 right now and I don't feel like changing it just to get a few Mhz, but if 6 core 32nm parts will be available, I will change it immediately.

This is exciting news - I thought the 1366 market was getting stagnant, and the lack of news regarding desktop 32nm processors (except for the single Extreme Edition CPU) with more than 2 cores was disappointing. As long as pricing is not prohibitive, my next CPU will probably come from this list. Can't wait to see what an overclocked 32nm hexa-core can do.

I can see how this is not exciting for people who are invested in a 1156 / dual channel setup, but for those with 1366 / triple channels systems, this is great news.

Since the quads are made from 32nm process, my guess is that it will be cheaper due to lower manufacturing cost.

I don't suppose there is a chance this might push down the cost of existing Xeon CPU's slightly?

And I also take it these will work straight off the bat with the existing 5520 chipset?

Is there a snowballs chance in hell that the L5604 will cost less than £400?

Does anyone know when these will hit the UK?

I hope these new 6 cores on 32nm will produce less heat, because i7 on 45nm does run quite warm, even warmer than my old Q9650 which is disappointing.

Isn't Q9650 also on 45nm? I think it is expected that a newest generation CPU with HT will have a higher TDP.
