Audigy 2 microphone input issue

I'm having a hell of a time this this Audigy 2 card. I have my headset plugged into the included front panel but the default microphone input is the card. I can change the input in the control panel to the front panel but windows changes it back to the card automatically. I have nothing plugged into the card directly. When the input is change to the front panel everything works normally. I've tried uninstalling an reinstalling the drivers with no luck. Using winxp 32 bit. Any ideas?

I don't understand, why don't you just connect the microphone to your sound card? Is the wire on your mic too short or something? What motherboard are you using? it sounds like you're trying to use the audigy2 and onboard sound at the same time.
