AMD/ATi HD4850/4870 Fan Fix!

    HD4850/4870 Fan Fix!

    if you make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive( make sure clock and memory settings are correct). You can then go to the file "C:\Users\Bretware(username)\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE \Bretw are. XML. the xml file will have the same name as the catalyst profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

    <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
    <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
    </Feature>
    <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
    <Property name="Want" value="0" />
    </Feature>
    <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
    <Property name="Want" value="65" />

    Change the value to "manual" and Want value to "65"

    Save the file then reload your profile in catalyst.

    65% seemed perfect for me, 70% was loud but you may need it if your case has poor air flow.

    You will have to select the profile everytime you start the computer, but it will work until there is a fix or better info so i can figure how to change the auto target temp.

    Good Luck ,bretware

    Source

    windows XP >> C:\Documents and Settings\username \Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\profile created .XML

    windows vista >> C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\profile created .XML

    PS: under the folder options in the control panel select show hidden files and folders

    Feedback:

    Amazing! Thank you very much! It worked perfectly, and within the first minute the temps dropped from 82C to 52C running on 70% speed (which isn't that loud)

    Wow, well done bretware!

    Set mine at 65% and it dropped temps by 22C...

    Works great, set 35% fan speed, idle's at 45-46c now.

    With the fan at only 35%, quite quiet, I loaded up FurRenderingBenchmark and set it for stability test, after 10 minutes temperature topped out at 81c. This is fantastic, especially for only 35% speed on a stock fan and running Fur benchmark. And this was with 790MHz on the core.

    Very nice, I didn't think it was possible for the card to be that hot or the heatsink to possibly be that poor. So now it's about as good as the gts g92's heatsink fan combo getting around 50's with 70% fan speed.

    Now I wonder how that compares to an HR03-GT on a similar card setup.

    Using an HR03-GT myself with 92mm fan, virtually silent operation, idle temps are 43-45c and load (2-3 hours of crysis on 1920x1200 very high dx10) topped out at 55c-57c, this is at 790/2000.

    Hmm I would think a 120mm fan wouldn't take up much more space and would be able to proved lower temps while being quieter.

    But nice temps none the less we may be seeing overclocking heaven soon.

    nice maybe this will prevent the memory from dying on the 4870s

    No.....not messing around with the BIOS or crazy overclocks will make sure the card does not die.

    This is purely a fan speed fix through a modified Catalyst profile used to keep temperatures down on the cards since people don't like seeing 80C+ on their GPUs. Even though it is well within the normal operating range of the R770 core.

    does rivertune consider flashing bios? or just use the Fan control part of the rivertune?

    Rivatuner doesnt support hd4000 series yet!

    if you want change the FAN speed without messing around with the Bios just use the method in the 1st post

    But why worry about the temps? Just because it feels better to look at 50C instead of 80C? Its not an issue, only illusional in the mind.

    That's not true at all. The hotter the card the shorter it's life just like processor's.

    Plus the cooler the component the less heat thats gonna be causing your case to turn into a furnace

    Modifying the profile worked awesome. You can create a second profile with slower speeds if the noise is too much when not gaming.

    As for why? A cooler chip is a happier chip. It's free, it's easy, and it certainly couldn't hurt. Pretty much a no brainer.

    Yeah, ATI should have done that in the first place. 30% speed rather than 10% at idle would still be very quiet and keep it cooler running, and like 65% at load (with a 55-60 degree target limit) would actually REDUCE the power consumption of the chip (besides increasing the longevity and overclockability).

    The power consumption is not that good with 4870's, actually exceeding the 8800GTX by a few watts under max load. If it was kept at 55 or 60 degrees, that would shave at least a dozen watts off the chip, as there would be less power leakage.

    On Penryns, a 20 degree difference saves like more than 40 watts when feeding that thing 1.5v, and does wonders for overclockability.

    i think wot he means is ....is it working properly or just reading an offset temp !!

    That's just nonsense. The card does NOT consume less power if it is cooler...
    It will consume maybe 1W more, because the fan spins faster, but it will never start producing less heat by being cooler, it can just get rid of the heat easier, making it cooler...

    Wrongo, instead of dumping less hotter air into your case, your dumping MORE warmer air. The amount of heat being dumped into the case will still be the same

    I don't think that's the case with a 4870 though, only with a 4850, seeing as the first one exhausts the hot air out of the back. So the hotter the 4870 is, the more heat gets dumped inside the case.
    But the 4850 is a different story, all the heat gets dumped inside the case.

    why not just blow the copper heatsink on rightside of the fan with a fan?
    it works, making idle temps about 55 degrees celsius while 100% fan just make more 10 degrees drop with a loud noise
    anyway thanks, it makes my card tells its blow
