Nvidia created GameWorks to advance gaming at a faster pace.

Rev Lebaredian, NVIDIA?s Sentior Director of Enginneering in the Content & Technology team, has penned a blog post that discusses NVIDIA GameWorks program and the reasons we find it so important.

We created GameWorks to advance gaming at a faster pace. Everyone at NVIDIA believes that great gaming hardware needs great games. So, in addition to building the best hardware, we also invest an enormous amount of our resources in making games better through GameWorks. GameWorks encompasses all of the game-related technologies we?ve invented and refined over the years. It includes a robust suite of tools and graphics technologies to help game developers build amazingly rich and immersive experiences. The key to the GameWorks platform is our 300+ visual effects engineers who develop libraries, developer tools, and code samples while working closely with developers to enhance their games.

Lords of the Fallen, released today, is an excellent illustration of our GameWorks program at work.

The creators of Lord of the Fallen were able to build a custom game engine from the foundation that NVIDIA’s GameWorks provided for them. Most if of the game’s visual effects were created by Deck13 and CI Games with NVIDIA GameWorks technology.

GameWorks takes a production-oriented approach to creating and providing new gaming effects, making it easier for these advances to be added into games. The subtle details in things such as hair, clothing, lighting, debris and water make games more immersive. We create algorithms and build toolsets to improve these effects, and provided them to developers like Deck13 and CI Games through GameWorks, who used them to make Lords of the Fallen for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Warface is a free-to-play online first-person shooter developed by Crytek. The game was developed with Crytek's CryEngine 3. A patch was released today to add support for NVIDIA Turbulence, and NVIDIA Particles to enhance the games realism – so smoke, dust, and other fluid dynamic effects will reach new levels of realism.

Smoke whiffs around players and objects. Dust swirls below the helicopter blades. Debris interacts with others objects realistically and remains in the scene. All of these effects are based on physics, so they react just like they would in the real world because...science.

This is another example of NVIDIA games works makes games better. NVIDIA has created a large amount of graphics techniques and code used to create special effects in games. GameWorks packages this library of graphics technologies in a production-oriented way, making it easier for developers to add them to their games.

Assassin’s Creed Unity, the next installment in the fantastic Assassin’s Creed series, is sure to be a hot seller this holiday season. Assassin’s Creed Unity is also the next great example of how NVIDIA GameWorks is making games better.

Assassin’s Creed Unity features NVIDIA GameWorks technologies including NVIDIA ShadowWorks™ (PCSS and HBAO+), NVIDIA TXAA™ and is the first implementation of NVIDIA Plug-and-Play Tessellation.

Check out the video with the GameWorks features in Assassin’s Creed Unity here:

Gameworks serves as a nice performance boost for Nvidia over AMD. It's a great marketing tool and a great way to ensure their cards are optimized better for these games. I don't buy the whole 'we are helping gamers' tidbit.

To help yourself you must help others. (or applied to business: Make a customer happy so he will be a returning customer)

Of course they want to keep making money from gamers, but does it really matter what their motivation is as long as it is mutually beneficial?

If it pushes games/developers out of the whole "code it/dumb it down for console, crappy port it to PC" funk many of them have been in I'm all for it.

It's not mutually beneficial when you have two GPU companies buying off developers to use code that makes their products excel. Sure, it's great as a consumer when you own the card in question, but what about when you play something not optimized for your card? It creates a back-room war where software developers are handicapping either AMD or Nvidia.

Fugger... you have way too much influence to be posting like this about a controversial system like gameworks, especially on your own forum. I'm not saying you shouldn't have an opinion, but your reputation is a expensive coin and this crap isn't where you should be spending it. And this thread smells like coin...

The AMD Gpu's used in the PS4 and Xbox One are the lowest common denominator, so both AMD and Nvidia need to give developers a push to support any Pc exclusive features, because if they don't then we face the risk of developers giving the Pc nothing more than 1:1 ports with all advances in technology going to waste.

So what you're saying is unless paid, game developers will dumb down every PC port. C'mon man...

The Crew is a revolutionary driving game from Ubisoft that will surely be a hit this holiday season. Ubisoft has been working with NVIDIA to add more eye-candy to the PC version of the game by incorporate GameWorks technologies.

“Together with NVIDIA, we have been working hard to develop exclusive visual enhancements for the PC version of the game.”

    - S?bastien Laban, cinematic director for The Crew

The Crew features NVIDIA ShadowWorks (HBAO+) and NVIDIA TXAA which deliver amazing graphics for an exhilarating gaming experience.

? NVIDIA HBAO+ adds realistic Ambient Occlusion shadowing and shading around objects and surfaces that occlude light, with a higher degree of precision than other AO techniques, significantly improving image quality in every scene.

? NVIDIA TXAA temporal anti-aliasing eliminates the distracting movement of anti-aliased lines and edges, and also eliminates other artifacts associated with anti-aliasing. Edge anti-aliasing is comparable with 8xMSAA, but at the performance cost of 4xMSAA.

“NVIDIA technologies are superior options for those looking for better graphic details and high quality anti-aliasing with the most efficient performance possible, to make the Crew look its absolute best.”

    - S?bastien Laban, cinematic director for The Crew

The Crew takes you and your friends on a reckless ride inside a massive, open-world recreation of the United States that is brimming with exciting challenges. Generous in content and tailored for the connected generation, The Crew is the next-gen game that redefines a genre.

Iconyu - I have a lot of contacts in the industry that send me "news" that the other news sites posts and to be honest, I read some and rarely post but I felt this is what is good for the gaming industry, tuning up new content is good for gamers.

I lean heavy towards Nvidia, sorry.

So are you saying that Nvidia shouldn't try to help companies optimize their games because AMD isn't doing the same thing (or at least isn't doing it to the same extent)?

Every company wants to be better than their competitor, and they'll do whatever they can (sometimes even illegal stuff) to have that edge.

You're almost implying that Nvidia is too successful and therefore shouldn't be trying to make their product better OR offering to help the game companies optimize their games, but only in ways that will help both their own product and their competitors' (despite the fact that they probably have *NO* clue how their competitor's hardware works).

They are too successful, without AMD to keep them pushing they'll sit back, and do nothing. Out of Intel, AMD and Nvidia I'd say Nvidia is the most inclined to see the death of a rival as a good thing.

Well, that's definitely your opinion. Let's stick to facts as opinions are like a**holes.. everyone has one... and it stinks...

I'd say that any company that is in a position to kill a rival would be happy to. If you've ever worked in a company that went from small-fry (which nvidia was just over a decade ago) see's it as a milestone in the company. Every company wants to be better than their competitor (and no competition definitely increases profits, which is also why monopolies are illegal).

How many people do you know at NVIDIA?

And Fugger: Thanks for posting this Fugger. Your faith in NVIDIA is well-founded.

    Really?

nVidia buddy-upped (and eventually bought-out) ELSA nearly 15 years ago, and has ridden that pony to the bank ever since ...
