P4C800-E hitting a wall at 255???

I can't seem to make my p4c stable beyond 255 fsb at any memory timing.

My setup consists of

Sapphire ATI 9500 > 9700
p4 2.4c
p4c800-e
2x 512 mb kingston hyper x pc3500
ttgi 520 watt power supply

I just can't seem to get beyond 255 stably. The machine runs STOCK voltages to 255 and is perfectly stable for anything i throw at it. But the second I go to 256..stablity goes down the drain..and won't even post at 257. I've tried the vcore/vmem/vagp to no avail and have also tried dropping the memory ratio from 320 to 266...also to no avail

Any ideas?

Sounds like CH5 problem, mine did the exact same thing. Was stuck at 256 5:4 until I switched to BH5 memory.

wholly crap, my P42.6C is also stuck at 265FSB on a IC7mobo i use CH5 kingston hyperX and even at 3:2 divider i cant get past 265 FSB no matter how hard i try 265FSB can be ran at 2500rpm on the fan really stable and all my other fans quiet and at 1.6V, even with all fans at max and all sorts of voltages all the way through to 1.75 it is COMPLETELY unstable at 270FSB, could it be the CH5 problem for me aswell, please can someone descrive this problem to me because if it is just my ram holding me back that would be awesome, i was convinced it was just a flat out limit for my CPU.

Well if you are on default volts, and increasing it to 1.6v and 1.7v does nothing, then its not your CPU.

Test your RAM 1:1, it will likely go higher than it is doing at 5:4 which means your chipset doesn't like your CH5 memory.

which ive allready done, indeed my ram does go abit higher at 1:1, thats why i thought my CPU was at fault. and it takes 1.6V and minimal airflow to reach 265FSB, at anywhere from 1.625V ranging through to 1.75, and upto 3 times as much speed in the cpu fan aswell as considerable speedups in all case fans it still wont run stable at over 267FSB. yes indeed it still sounds like its a CH5 problem, im hoping it is :P cos that means i can get a cheap speed boost through buying some nice BH5 ram and selling my KHX, shouldnt end up costing me more than 50$ australian to do the upgrade and who knows how much higher my cpu will go im excited. thanks soulburner. hopefully our suspicions are correct and then ill be a VERY happy man. (3.5GHz HERE I COME!)

Yes I'm sure you have the notorious HyperX with Ch5 chipset problem. I got to 260 FSB though. You need to change your memory for something with preferably BH5 chips.

270 stock voltages...275 with a bit of a voltage bump.

I've been able to get in windows 285 and boot 290.

I have a sinking feeling it's the vcore droop holding me back now.

I can't seem to find the mod for the p4c800 for that. Except for the p4p800 mod that solders onto the resistor. I'd much rather solder to the ic. I killed an a7n8x doing that vdd mod long time ago..lol..I'm not going to pull that again. I'm fine with going onto an ic.

Thanks for all the help. It was driving me up a wall. ;P

The vcore fluctuation hasnt been known to hamper overclocking though it is annoying. Just up it a bit in the BIOS.

My XMS Corsair PC3200?

Hey, How could I find out if my 512MB Corsair XMS DDR400 PC3200 is CH5, or BH5? I cap out at 255FSB, super low temp, stock cooling and voltages. with a 2.4C and P4P800-DX.

Any ideas on how to check?

Thanks a bundle guys!

Sounds like CH5 to me.

Look on the heatspreader. It probably says v.1.2.

Yep, it says the v.1.2 on it.

Thanks for the help with that, I guess I should have googled it.. but forums are so much friendlier. I'm only 16, and with a verrrrry tight budget for anything, so I'd like to try to get a stick with BH5 chips, to release the OC. What should I do? Sell my current stick on eBay, use the money (plus whatever else I can scrape up :P) And get a BH5 chip?

Any suggestions would help me out a lot, and do you have any suggestions for RAM, in the 100-200USD range?

Thanks again!

(This really symbolizes me with my computer..... just poke it til it bleeds)

yeah Kingston HyperX 3200 or 3000 non-A (KHX3200) is probably the cheapest. OCZ 3500 LE or Mushkin 3500 level 2 are also excellent but a little more coin.

Hey, sorry to kick this back up again, but are these OCZ400512R2 using the BH-5, CH-5 or another type of RAM chip?

They're the OCZ DDR400 512MB w/ copper heat spreaders... also, does anyone know if these OCZ400512ELDC-K use BH-5, CH-5 or other? These are basically the dual channel kit of the same RAM.

Thanks guys!

No 3700+ is bh5. They are most likely ch5. bh5's are generally 2700-3500

It was used in PC2700 memory, OCZ did some laser trick to them and made them clock way higher...first memory to hit DDR500 without volt mods (like BH5).

250 1:1 2.5/3/3/7 2.8v looped memtest for 8 hours and spent the better part of today encoding video. Picking up a p4c800 this week to do the volt mods and see if it will do anything like bowman got. It did not like going over 252@2.8v 2.5/3/3/7. I didn't loosen up the timings because my GeIL's will do 263@2.8v 2.5/4/3/7.... Needs more volts I guess.
