Buying memory is pretty much buying memory chips (DRAM chips) + company support/reputation. Since no memory company actually manufacturers their own chips (except Crucial/Micron, and some GeIL) the performance between similar chips will be about the same, depending on how they treat their chips (some sand it down, ect.).

Memory chips currently used (in some esteem) are:
Winbond BH-5 - Arguebally #1; Becoming Harder to Find
    Hynix D43 "B" - Used in Most PC4x00
Winbond CH-5 - Newer but Worse then BH-5; Most Common in PC3200/PC3500

Hynix D43 "B" memory is used in OCZ PC4x00, Corsair XMS4000 PRO, Mushkin PC4000, GeIL PC4x00 Ultra, and most other PC4x00.

Winbond BH-5 memory is used in Muskin "Black-Level 2" PC3200/PC3500, Buffalo PC3700, and Kingston HyperX3000 and HyperX3200 (NON A; check for Product Codes of KHX3200K2/1G NOT KHX3200AK2/1G).

Winbond CH-5 memory is used in most Corsair XMS3200/3500, Kingston HyperX 3200A/3500, Mushkin "Black-Level 1" PC3200/PC3500, OCZ PC3200/PC3500 EL, and many others.

If you want high FSB (260-300) - and you don't have a Socket 754 processor - you will have to suffer with high timings (3-4-4) and will probably need to put in high voltage still (2.9-3.2V) to get DDR600.

Or, since you have a i865/i875 mobo I presume, could best with (price no object as you say) Mushkin BL2 PC3500 with your FSB running at a 5:4 ratio. This will allow you to get high processor speeds (high processor bandwidth) while still being able to get tight timings (2-2-2).

Wrong, Geil uses their own process and chips, not Hynix for their 4000.

GeIL does produce some of their own chips, but the chips found on the GeIL Ultra Platinum-Series are usually from outside companies. While GeIL hasn't confirmed any use of Hynix D43 in their PC4000/4200 it is speculated that they do. Nevertheless, performance between GeIL's use of chips and Hynix D43 are very similar.

Geil is Hynix as is corsair and OCZ and everyone else running ddr500 or higher, its just we(OCZ) have a better PCB

OCZ3500LE is BH5 based and cheaper than the mushkin, it also clocks as well.As soon as i have the modules here I will push em with 3V and see what they do.
Got a problem with your OCZ product....?

This is the only way to go IMO, my experience with OCZ PC4000
Gold has convinced me that PC4000 and its slack timings are a waste of money. Guaranteed to limit your cpu overclock for sure too. Stay away from ALL PC 4000, get the Mushkin PC3500 L2

I just tested 2 sticks of mushkin pc3500 l2 and 2 of buffalo pc3700. Both performed right about the same which is expected since they're both bh-5. Buffalo is alot cheaper but I suppose you can prolly also get yer replacement sticks from mushkin alot easier too after you fry them from the insane voltage you tortued them with

    Thank you guys for replying.

Since most of you recommend the Mushkin 3500L2, i tested to see how far my 2.4C would go with my Corsair 3500C2 1x512mb which maxes at 200 on my IC7 @ SPD settings and 2.8v. Using 3:2 it booted up to 313fsb, barely. Let's say that my cpu/mb would be stable @ 313fsb, 5:4 = 250, 3:2 = 208, go with DDR500/533 @ ~2.5-4-4-7 or Mushkin 3500L2 @ ~2-2-2-6 ?

If you go with the Mushkin you will have to run the 3:2 divider at that FSB speed unless you plan on doing a vdimm mod to give your RAM 3.5v.

If not, PC4000 is a waste, get OCZ 3700 Gold as it will run 250-260mhz with better timings than the 4000's.

Running at 3:2 does have a little premium of a performance hit over 5:4, where the performance hit is little to none on i875/i865 boards. If you do give your BH5 memory some extra juice (2.9-3.2V - big differance between the 2 ) you may get it going above 230MHz (DDR460) at 2-2-2 timings. You will then be able to run your FSB above 290MHz (~3.5GHz on 2.4C) while running 5:4 FSB:MEM ratio.

For lowest prices of Mushkin (which is found cheapest at Newegg) and other BH5 memory, check this updated list (at OC-Forums).

dont suppose anyone knows of any shop in the UK that has anything (cheaper the better, i.e. twinmos?) with guaranteed BH5 chips on it?

i can get corsair 3200 but i dont know if they all have bh5 or not and i dont wanna risk ending up with kak ch5 chips.

What the KHX3200K2/512 designation really refers to is that it's an earlier revision then the current (currently being produced that is) KHX3200AK2/512. Like the Corsair XMS 3200 rev1.1 and rev1.2. Earlier Corsair XMS3200 used both Winbond BH-5 and BH-6 chips, and switched revisions due to Winbond's switch over to CH-5. This is the same thing that happened with Kingston. Although Kingston must have had a rather large stockpile of BH-5, as they seem to be still shipping these older revision memory along with their newer A-revision. This means that is very likely you have BH-5 chips, although it's not entirely a given.

Performance may be lacking for several differant reason. Chipset limitations, processor limits, bad modules, or simply interferance might require a raise of voltage. Giving higher voltage may require a VDIMM mod on your motherboard, but BH-5 memory thrives with high voltage.

.......I agree. Mine does 250ddr at default settings Cas2 3-3-7 and when running 5:4 I know I'm safe up to 315 before I need to raise it to Cas 2.5 3-3-7 which its does to 260ddr...........

OCZ PC3500 EL Platinum (Limited-Edition) (OCZ3500LE) uses Winbond BH-5 chips, just the same as Mushkin PC3500 Black-Level 2. OCZ3500LE was just announced earlier this month, so it may be a bit hard to find. Whichever is cheapest, I would go with.
