    Hi Guys,

I am new here. I came here because you guys are the best, and know all the newest hardware on the market and I need a little help.

I am building a CAD system that will be running stock. I need the most reliable motherboard solution on the market. I could go with socket 940 or 939. I like Asus stuff, but Wrench tells me that people have problems with the A8V Deluxe motherboard. I am also looking at MSI and Abit as motherboard suppliers. What is your guys experience with these motherboards? What do you recommend as the most stable, trouble-free board?

    Thanks for your input!

    - Nekros

if the locks aren't working it sucks for overclocking

solution 1 get a bios with working locks and it OCs pretty good and stable.

solution 2 don't OC the board more than 5% and will be fine.

problems mainly are if the locks aren't working and you OC the board past 220 FSB then the SATA becomes unstable. I have a 1.02 board and loaded bios 1005.21 and it runs nice. I can run 2.6 - 2.7 ghz and stock is 2.2 ghz

Since you are going to run stock speeds you will have NO issues.

get the asus and OC that puppy about 10% should be safe and fine. Just make sure locks are working.

    Thanks iboomalot and xgman.

I really want to go with the Asus solution cause they are my favorite brand. I have built hundreds of systems with them and only a couple have had issues. I really dont want to go with MSI cause almost every motherboard i bought, i had problems! Abit is great stuff too, but I dont know how there 64 bit lineup is in terms of stability.

The 1.2 and 2.0 are both good, but the 2.0 is the first board that officially supports AGP/PCI locks.

It's a great board. My 100% air-cooled system with A8V/FX-53/X800 XT is the fastest unmodded system on the 2k1 ORB, the second fastest air-cooled including mods (even though my MBD is stock and running 1GB of RAM) and with phasechange on the CPU only (stock air on X800 XT) I believe I'm #15 overall if you take only the highest score per user.

I'm a big Asus fan too. There are some things that you need to understand before overclocking it, but once you do it's a very good performer.

A word of caution: Don't buy a Newcastle (512k cache) chip like the 3500+ of 3800+. If you are going to go S939 FX-53 is the way to do it. Otherwise an S754 system will outperform the S939 and for a lot less money.

Before this turns into another "Storm is a ba$tard who just wants to make money" thread, this is why you DON'T want a Newcastle:

My FX-53 on stock air (CPU and VC both) with much lower CPU, VC and MEM clocks:

Haloooo, factor in the cost of the phase-change and chilled water, versus Storm's stock aircooling The FX-53 becomes the cheaper of the two setups...

The only prob with the A8V is the low vdimm, even with mods

good point but thats true for every system.

I bet Storm's air cooling on his GPU alone costs more than my water cooled setup

Asus has voltage limiting thus Vmods don't help.

When the DFI mobo comes out to play the 939s scores will improve across the board including the NC ones.

Run some 3700 EB in it and you don't need to do a vdimm mod
It's a good board teamed up with the .21 bios.

I don't see what you're saying. He's using stock aircooling, that costs $0 Your watercooling i'm sure cost more than that.

When the DFI comes out, S754 scores will improve as well, look at OPPs score. So what's your point ?

my A8V is a real POS!!!

but he was probably defective....not stable at stock speed....tested with 3 cpu (2x3500+ and 1xFX53) and with Mushkin PC3500Level2...Corsair 3200llpt CH5 and OCZ 3700EB

i'll wait 2 or 3 week before RMA and got a rev 2

have you seen a pic of his air cooling heatsink that totally wraps around the card???

I looked back and he said stock cooler and he had done a VGPU mod. very impressive scores either way.

main b!tch is lack of quality 939 mobos so they should get more benefit vs the 754s when the DFIs hit the market.

I don't know who's videocard you were looking at but it was not mine. Here's my videocard on the 3700+ system, the CPU of which is now at the top of the ORB.

And here is the score of that rig:

And here is my latest 100% air-cooled unmodded FX-53 score:

Storm I don't believe anything you print because I can use my brain.

Fastest Unmodded 100% Air-cooled PC on Earth!!! No tweaks, just overclocks, 100% aircooling.
sure that shouldn't read Fastest aircooled fully Volt modded PC on Earth??? before you start back peddling few quotes before you did any of your runs.

I did the VCORE mod on the K8NS Pro, and I did the VGPU mod on the X800 XT
I don't know. This is the first time I ever vmodded anything so I'll just be happy if it doesn't fry. I did a Vcore, Vdimm and VGPU all at the same time. We'll see what happens
for someone who has built so many computers
And I promise you NOBODY has built more A64 based computers than I. Not Falcon, not VooDoo, NOBODY!!!
and you had never Volt modded anything until 3 weeks ago???

just lends to your creditibily as the all knowing master OCer.

Great scores I have to admit but that changes nothing and shows you are using your mouth/typing to try and belittle me has no effect and thus is a waste of time.

so I feel for ya man
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

back on subject the A8V is a very nice board rev 1.02 use bios 1005.21 rev 2.0 should have locks.

    enjoy your overclocking experience.

    1) I have 3 Visiontek X800 XTs, all stock air-cooled. One of them has a vGPU mod but not the one I used on the A8V run I posted.

    2) The vmods were done on a K8NS Pro, not my A8V which is the 100% stock run.
    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8054269

    3) Not all those quotes were before I did my runs. I bench often.

    4) Never claimed to be an overclocker at all, least of all a "Master OC'er", but I do know a lot about computers in general because I've been building systems since 1981, and a hardware junky since 1979.

    5) Exactly WHAT do I have to gain by saying my system is not vmodded when it is? I have only 1 vmodded run on the ORB right now, and it's this one:
    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7996206

All others are completely unmodded. I showed how you lied about my videocard and I provided a picture as proof, so you accuse me of being a liar? You are a real piece of work my friend. You wouldn't be posting here from a prison cell would you?

kinda back to topic: So do ALL A8V's have PCI/AGP locks with this new bios (even rev. 1?), or only certain revisions. Since Rev. 2 isn't avaible over here.

suppose to have locks on the rev 2.0 mobos

rev 1.02 should have locks but requires a Bios change(1005.21).

Only the 2.0 OFFICIALLY supports locks, but 1.2 has them if you use a BIOS that supports it.
