Hardcore nudity - featuring a 165 from 06, week 5.
My Opty 165 CCB1E 0605 XPMW seemed to be running a little toasty. I had been burning in core 1 for a cumulative 25+ hours with maybe ~50mhz in stability gained at stock voltages (2.6ghz). My core 1 is so sucky tho, right now it's hitting a wall and refuses to do 2700mhz even with 1.5v, fails prime instantly.
Anywho, I decided to take the spreader off of the 165, which is no new ball game for me as I've been stripping my chips for quite some time now.
- Here's just a few of the ladies I've dis-robed over the past year. I'd have more to show, but I've sent one or two along in trades and lost another.
Temps are surprisingly close to what they were before, unlike every other time I've removed an IHS. Im loading maybe 3-4c lower than I was with the IHS on. Still an improvement, but nothing earth shattering.
If anyone has any idea how to man up my core 1 to keep up with core 0, lemme know.

The damn core 1 fails instantly in pi 1m even with 1.5v @ 2.7ghz. Core 0 at this speed with 1.4v is totally prime stable. How bad does this suck? Any tips?

i recommend burn in with cpuburnk7. this prog will stress the cpu at temps above dual prime stress. make sure your able to stress for over 8 hrs then turn off the comp. then reprime to see if you increase in prime time.

I have the exact same problems i have a feeling it has got something to do with the Ballistix we both are using.
When i test my cpu with SP2004/Prime @ 2.85 it instanly crashes within seconds.
I realy tested it with everything i could imagine intensive gaming, DVD recodeing using Cinema Craft encoder for 10 hours straight .... norting will let it crash at this speed....
Been using it the last 4 months without problems ..... altough the stress test programs say it is far from stable .....
I can only conclude that testing stability with these programs in my case is just a big waste of time .... :P
The victims : 2 3200+ , 2 Opteron 165 and a Opteron 146.
That's stripping 5 chips this year ! An average of more than 1 chip per month ....
Actually, its two 3200+'s, a 148, a 146, and a 165 (the latest). And as I stated above, I have stripped more than just those, but I don't have the IHS's. There's also a lot of chips I haven't stripped due to laziness or because they were poor ocers and I knew I would be selling them shortly.

Let me let you all in on a little secret regarding the 165 Opterons. AMD bins them as such because one of the cores is weak. Those that buy 165's because they're cheaper and are looking for a great clocker would do much better to get the 170 chip (or 175 if they can afford one).

I had two 170's before this, good steppings, and they clocked just as poorly. Been having a batch of bad luck lately with my stuff. Guess good runs can't last forever unless you have insider insider insider assistance. I think I'm at 1 1/2 insiders.
FCG i haven't noticed the core0/core1 delta to be particularly greater on 165s as compared to 170s. The cores are very close on my good 170, but that's because it's a great chip. The 0608MPMW 165 i used was like that too; cores weren't too far apart, and it clocked superbly.
Besides the multiplier i haven't found any difference between 170 and 165 overclocking. I've had an 0551 165 that clocked further than the 0551 170. Generally with 0550VPMW the 170s are stronger. Overall though i can't say there is much difference, and as for 175s: the same. Someone here posted a 175 0550UPMW and it barely broke 2.8 Ghz.
I am not seeing the effects of speedbinning.

Again, it's all about the stepping.. all I've ever used are 165's (4 or 5 now IIRC?) here's what I've come up with-
0534spmw- 2.7@1.475 (165's of this stepping absolutely destroy the 170's)
0550vpmw-2.8@1.45
0551upmw-didn't even test
0610dpmw-3.0@1.5
0608mpmw-3051@1.475
another 0610dpmw-2826@1.35
imo amd bins them as 165's because they need a larger supply of them And I have yet to see a good 175, maybe because no one buy's them, or maybe because their steppings all suck

Happens to me when my proc is at 2.7GHz 1.58v-1.61v. Prime = fails within a minute or so but I can play CS for hours, encode DVD's, etc etc. I have 2x512MB Ballistix. It DOES pass S&M though, you might want to try that.
