Kayl / 2 = SLI
I got asked to try something for a guy here in the UK, who will remain nameless unless he chimes in.
He wanted me to have a go at making some decent thin evaps for his sli kit he's going to make.
So he sends me a Kayl old revision head, and I say...
No problem
So the only real challenge is filling the captube hole and pounding in the tube just a little on the top of one, and the bottom of the other, so that it will braze up nice. The tiny 'dot' of braze where the cap hole is shouldn't make any real difference and will likely not even see much of the contact patch.
I had to cover the old top section's hole at the top, that's the brazed square up there. I also cut the top of the base section for better refirgerant flow.
That's a 1/4" suction, which is a little restrictive, but shouldn't hinder performance that much.
It's only got the 2 channels, but that should allow for decent surface area. I think it will work better than people will think it should, but they are thin enough to fit nicely no matter what setup you have.
Captube will be 3.5m of .031" on each line, entering just under the suction tube which will flow up the channel opposite.
I'm just waiting for the suction flexi to get here, and I'm out of captube, so will pick some up tomorrow and braze it up in preparation for the flexi's.
Sorry for the delay, I finally got the 1/4" bore flexi SS line, and brazed and finished things off.
10' of .028" captube per head. 600mm flex per line. 1" tail of 1/4" pipe from the heads to the flexi.
Who says phase can't be sexy
Cheers
Gray

Original height vs. sli head. Overall height is 17mm on the taller one incl. cap brazed on, original is 32mm.

good work.!!!!!!
keep the 1/4" peice as short as possible, but that small peice won''t hurt performance ,gas will just flow faster thru the smaller diameter. Just so its not real long, flow is greatly reduced at low pressures and small diameters in long runs.
if you don't want to elimanate the thickness of the patch next time, simply thread hole and insert a brass or copper set screw a little below flush and braze over then lap. perfectly flush. more work though.

Thanks everyone
Hey Walt! Yeah I'll be trimming back as far as I dare with the 1/4" to the flex line when it get's here.
With the evaps being so thin to begin with, space wasn't really much of a concern. Beyond that, the mass of the one evap was slightly higher than the other. I know that a brazed on piece isn't going to do a lot for it as it's not part of the whole, but the weight is very closely matched now.
It's just a shame, this will be assembled and then sent away for someone else to play with. I might just try something similar though now for a new project when time allows

I would have probably made 1 with the suction on the bottom and 1 on top to test against each other. refrigerant isn't at its coldest as soon as it exits the cap tube. the rapidily expanding refrigerant causes the area immediatly after the exit of cap tube to have a slightly higher pressure than farther away.

Thats some nice work their garry, copper isnt the best metal to mod
I am interested to see how the 2 layers go their garry.
Ya should be getting some 3 layer ones soon so can see which is better for me
Im interested how you insulate these things.

Gray is there a spare evap now? From what I remember I think there's one. Feel free to cut that one up or I can send you 2 SLI blocks when I get them in off Kayl
By the way guys these will be built into my 24/7 rig using a GL9 1/4hp? compressor under my CPU phase.
Insulating is gonna be the hardest bit but I'm thinking of a pelt type insulation as these things are so small. When I gave the blocks to Gray for modding I had no idea how small he'd make them. Definately smaller than I thought.
Cheers Gray mate

Well I still have no small suction lines yet but I've brazed up the SLI heads, ready for when they show. will be trimming the pipes down as much as I can for the suctions to be closer to the heads, and cut down on resistance in the 1/4" pipes.
Each head has exactly 10' of .028" captube, so tuning is up to 150w per head max.
And that's that really. You can see the 'dot' on the last one, that's where the captub hole was predrilled, but otherwise prety standard. I've oly done a basic lap on these, will do the full polish after the flexi's are brazed on.
