Aquagate mini 120 beats Big Typhoon...is this for real?
I just read this review:
http://www.3dxtreme.net/index.php?id=cmaquagater1204
What do you think about this? If this review has any credibility I may be tempted to try this.

Ask dnottis, he's the one using it and it's his review. He's getting better results with the Aquagate than he did with his Big Typhoon, and I'm confident he knows what he's doing.

I wonder why it is not more popular...perhaps a case of people passing judgment before trying it?

Its hard to beleive. I've had kits like that. I'd take stock heatsink over them. I feal he may have done a good review. But what was he reading temperatures with?

I dont see much logic on this statement honestly. Is like people dismissing Big Typhoon cause it was made by thermal take.

No no, Ive had a lot of those kits or had friends that bought them against advice. I know someone with that exact kit. His presscot is constantly overheating while gaming.

my friend has a thermaltake bigwater... he has to underclock his 3500 (iirc) to remain stable in a fairly cool room. utterly pathetic.

Im using the same exact OS install and MBM5 install, same as I used for all the air coolers - the only thing that changed was the CPU coolers. Did it beat the Big Typhoon? Yes. Fair and square.
However I am using a reverse ATX case which I feel is really optimal for the Aquagate system. Allowing me to mount the unit at the front of the case and pull cool air into the case and exhaust with another 120mm fan out the back. (check the pics in the review) Other reviews with the Aquagate in a standard ATX will not get cool air blowing in, it would be blowing air from within the case through the Aquagate and out the back of the case.
This is why I think my results were so much better - and yes all of this was explained in the review.
I'm trying to get Thermaltake to send the Silent Water over... more l/h (72 vs 45) and top mounted tubes...
Maximum PC had great results with the Aquagate and one of the companies (Falcon maybe) are shipping it with an overclocked FX57. The R120 is not as good as a real water cooling system, but it has proven to be better than the best air. And as far as running a 150 CFM fan, no thanks I need quiet. I replaced the stock fan with a Thermaltake adjustable fan after the review and it's running nice and quiet now.

Prime long hours.
Here was at 10 hours - load was 39 deg c. 2900 1.50v
2920 1.55v load 41 deg c.

I think that should prove that long hours of load dont overcome it.
Also, with the Big Typhoon I needed 1.52v for 2900 and 1.55v for 2920, load temps were 45 and 48 respectively.

Exactly - Thermaltake nailed a grand slam with the Big Typhoon - definitely the BEST air cooler!

thats wierd becaue after 30 mins of full load at 180 watts i had overpowereed the R80 which is the 80mm verison of the same cooler to 56c and above 180 watts for over 30 mins would manke the system unstable.

I doubt an AMD64 Opteron would put out 180 watts though. Had we used an Intel Press-HOT CPU Im sure the results would be different.

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to post my experience with the mini R120.
First off I picked it up for $50 at newegg. Put it on my new C2 e6600 / P5W DH. I place the Rad in front of cas with the fan pulling air thru it. Now I was concerned in the beggining about my temps in load. Idle would very from 24c-28c and load would go up to 60c with 2 instances of prime. Thought maybe my Wb wasn't makin good contact but the rad was warm.. well hot actually so it was doin the job. I wanted to try something before I re-installed the WB.
I put another 120mm fan in front of my rad to push air with a ghetto shroud made out of cardboard and 100 mile-n-hour tape. Push/Pull method worked wonders with this R mini.
My idle hovers 21c-22c and load with 2 instances of prime running for over 12 hours gets 38c.
My current OC for my e6600 is @ 3.2 Ghz 1:1 ratio 1600fsb. So far Im happy with it.
I only bought it cause it was cheap and newegg didnt have the Apex Ultra in stock at the time of purchase and I was just goin to fool around with it.
I have to say that with the added fan I get excellent results compared to just the 1 fan.
