I'm gonna pull my heatspreader of my FX55
this weekend, I was wondering, can you buy a shim that will protect me from mashing the core up when I put the heatsink on?...

why are you doing this??? I don't think's its even close to worth if it your water cooling it. It will make just about no difference in your OC.
My $0.02, but maybe you don't care. Good luck, lets see pics if you do.

no shims for a64 yet. no need for them. a good tip is to put maskign tape over the little IC's around the core. the heatsink will have a tendecny to tip and toch them, shorting them out.
good luck btw. hope u dont kill it like i did.

I wouldn't do it either. I know people like to do extreme things, but that's going overboard.

On winchester cores it will gain you a 50mhz +...on newcastle...it won't gain you that much... I got 2 times 20mhz gain on newcastle cores.

Warranty=pfft
Be careful man!!
I screwed up bad when I did a fx55. Pushed a little to hard with razor around the edges and I crunched the top off of one of the surface components
(not sure if resistor)
Chip still posted and ran fine at stock and mildly oc'd speeds, but it lost about 200mhz on its max overclock from 3514 to 3390....it's just a gamer now

just don't cut it with a knife if you're worried about the resistors. i used a piece of plastic from a package of eclipse gum. it was hard, but it worked just fine.
and to whoever said there is no thermal paste between the core and ihs.. that's not true, there is. it's really hard stuff though, almost like epoxy, but not.
and one thing to note, when i removed my ihs, i found the core was slightly rounded.. infuriated me to no end, so i ended up lapping the core.

lapping the core.. well that is rather dangerous... even more dnagerous than ihs removal. but luckily there is a thick layer of garbage over the real core as ai found out when it ook a hammer to my axp moible after it blew up.

Dumb idea. void any warranty..risk cutting though or cracking core.. That epoxy is a to cut though..trust I've done it but on a $128 chip not a $1000 one...
BTW that machine on water too saw maybe 50mhz boost...
Risk vs reward = suck
