Smile iSuppli: AMD is back in the semiconductor top 10

Source: http://www.techreport.com/
Quote:
AMD is back in the saddle. After dropping out of the top-10 semiconductor supplier rankings and slipping into 12th place last year, AMD will emerge in ninth place this year, according to a round of preliminary numbers by iSuppli.

The market research firm has compiled a complete scoreboard showing this year's predicted top-20 semiconductor suppliers, their revenue, and how their performance compares to last year's. Behold:

AMD isn't the only one to have gained ground—STMicroelectronics and Hynix did, as well. That said, iSuppli expects only one of the companies in the top 10 will actually achieve revenue growth in 2009: Samsung, which is sitting steady in the number-two spot.

iSuppli believes the semiconductor market as a whole will see a 12.4% revenue decline compared to 2008. As bad as that sounds, it actually beats the 20% drop the firm predicted earlier this year. Also, sequential revenue drops only took place in Q4 2008 and Q1 2009. iSuppli notes that semiconductor sales "rebounded smartly after that," growing by more than 18% in both Q2 and Q3. The firm expects fourth-quarter growth to amount to 5%.
Welcome back, AMD! About time.

I can't wait for AMD to start making good cpus again. At least ATI is keep them a float even though they've taken on a lot of water.

amd makes good ones now, they are the best for many core servers and laptops/desktops with IGP (although thats from the IGP chipset not the cpu) ATM, and for non overclocking the p2 is just as fast as the i7

no way P2 is on par with i7

i had both and have to admit that i7 is faster than PII in almost any app but i7 rigs cost at least 2x more than AMD so it's a bad comparison

for non ocing PII is on par or faster than C2D/Q

with ocing i7 is king and AMD beats intel in the low-mid range (100-300€ cpu + board)

Phenom II is not meant for take up the Core i7 series, my friend.
Phenom II is delayed architecture to take up C2D architecture. The delay makes AMD Phenom II has to face fierce competition.

your thinking clock for clock, they dont cost the same clock for clock. at the pricepoints were amd is they are on par with i7 chips. if u went to the store to buy a computer and u saw that u could get a 920/950 or an 860 (at stock) and compare that to a 965be ($100 cheaper than the 920 or 860) they are about the same performance and with the same power draw. i am not saying better just if u cant oc they are still good and about the same

They 'moved up' yet their revenue is less than last year. Seems like they they gained ground only because others slipped worse.

I did not realise how big a giant Intel was in the semiconductor industry.
