ASUS P6X58D Premium motherboard now available

"Eager to get in all the USB 3.0 hard drives, SSD drives and... other hard drives cropping up these days? Then you're in luck, as ASUS' brand new, USB 3.0-ready P6X58D Premium motherboard is now finally available to order. Of course, being an early adopter doesn't come cheap, and this particular motherboard will run you a hefty $309.99 from Newegg. That will get you a board that runs with the best of 'em, however, including support for a Core i7 processor, room for up to 24GB of RAM, three PCI-Express 2.0 slots, a pair of 6Gb/s SATA interfaces, four plain old USB 2.0 ports and, most importantly, two for USB 3.0. Setting up a rig? Feel free to let us know how it works out in comments."

They changed the heatsink on this. I love it! It looks much more clean and professional. Guess what I'm buying next week? Can't wait to see how it ocs...

I think the first p6t failed enough to turn most away until some people start posting reviews, not benching, and for a 24/7 power house why not more sata ports? those other two should be beside the othe 90 degree sata ports.
Good 8 Pin placement though I like to see something logical and cmos battery is in a good place too so thumbs on that.

Looks alright, but why did ASUS put the extra 2 SATA ports facing vertically instead of horizontally like the others? Other than that it looks nice, colour scheme isn't too bad.

Why not? If you're gonna use more than 6 Drives it will be almost impossible to keep it 100% clean so it doesn't really matter if the other 2 will show some cables...

I wonder how the PCIe lanes are split between the onboard chips.

X58 has 36 lanes, 32 are used for the 3x 16x Slots, so the remaining 4 are split between: 1x PCIe, 2x Marvell Gigabit NIC, 1x Marvell SATA3 chip, 1x USB3 chip.

Unless both Marvell NICs are sharing 1 lane, I don't see how they could all fit.

Good point. No NF200, no nothing. Maybe it will switch the PCIE to 8-8-8 aka 24 when more than 1 card is installed.

Dont like the PCI-E placement, assuming same colour= full speed

WHY ARE COMPANIES STILL RELEASING.....AFTER 5 YEARS..... SLI+CF BOARD WITH SINGLE SLOT SPACING FOR 2-WAY SETUPS?

Should ONLY have to compromise for 3+4 way

The bolded ones are hooked via SB lanes (PCIe 1.1, six of them).

Pretty board, but they fubared the PCIe x16 slot spacing for me compared to the current P6T deluxe (which can still run dual graphics and raid). I say leave the triple VGA stuff for enthusiast boards and provide some breathing space for setups that aren't going to be run on a bench.

the point their making is that it would still look cleaner and it would, all sata cables in 1 spot and you can zip tie them together, etc.

most newer cases come with motherboard cutouts near the areas where a normal mobo would have the sata ports, in those cases you would have to run the cables in a different way or up to where the other sata cables are. even if there were cutouts near the bottom in some pc cases it would still clean up the bottom of the mobo making it look 'cleaner' and tricking your eye into seeing less sables especially when bunched up.

really with so many mobo choices people can be really picky if they like.

IIRC those are SAS ports.

They're labeled SATA on the PCB.

That being said, I don't particularly care that they're over there on their own, since I'd never use that many anyway. Huzzah for storage servers. This looks like a really neat board!

that was on the original board were thats were the sas were, this one has usb3 and sata6. so the blue are 6xich10r the white are 2x marvel sata6

as for slots the usb and sata6 are on the same chip and they are speced for 1x pci-e 2.0 so i doubt that things will be working as the speed that they are meant to using sata6 or more than 1 usb3 port

I don't think so man. The 3 PCIE slots work in either 16/8/8 or 16/16/1 plus the 1x PCIE so that leaves at least 2 PCIE lanes for SATA 6GB and USB 3.0. I think they should work more or less at their intended speed. The thing is though this still isn't available here. ( I'm starting to loose my patience, maybe I will get the gigabyte UD7 board.

looks nice, the sticker below the nb heatsink looks lame imo, but besides that... looks great!
power and reset buttons are in a bad spot though, and no onboard buzzer is a bit weird... so no beep codes... and theres no debug led either... so how are people going to know whats wrong, in case theres a problem? and only one bios chip? that sucks for an extreme board...

those things should be connected via the sb, not x58 ioh.

its most likely
16
16/8
0/8

and they used the extra ioh links for the usb3 controller...
everything else is connected to the sb i think

Picked one of these up a week ago and I like it. Of course it doesn't have the features of high end x58's but it is easy to work with and I got it to try out new storage systems, not for benching. One thing I like is that you can set the lane configurations in the bios for the pciex16 slots. With 3 devices installed, you can choose x16, x16, x1 or x16, x8, x8. Very helpful feature.
