Deus Ex 3 PC exclusive Eidos and Square Enix joint effort
Quote:
Final Fantasy developer Square Enix is helping out Eidos Montreal with Deus Ex 3, it was revealed today. Specifically, Square Enix is helping Eidos to develop the cutscenes and in-game cinematics.
While it may seem like an unusual partnership, Square Enix is apparently very proud to be working on the Deus Ex franchise and is keen to help Eidos on other IPs that are in production - Thief 4 in particular.
"The people in Tokyo are just so glad to work on it," said Eidos' Stephane D'Astous in a comment to Edge. "This is the first project for them that's a non-Final Fantasy title--they even want to work on Thief 4 too."
Square Enix bought out the UK-based Eidos earlier this year after the company fell on hard times and started looking for buy-out offers. While EA and Ubisoft were other contenders for the ownership of the Deus Ex, Thief and Tomb Raider franchises that Eidos owns, it was Square that closed the deal in the end.
News on Deus Ex 3 itself has been slow over the past few months, with an expect 2009 release date silently sliding out of sight while Eidos continues to work on the title. It has been confirmed that the game is a cyberpunk prequel to the first game though and that it won't be getting a console release due to the complexity of the game.

Square helping out on a PC exclusive title?
You know, this is so crazy that it might just work.

Honestly? I have to admit I never played Deus Ex although friends told me about it. If it is PC-exclusive I will buy it nevertheless. Time to show 'em we PC-gamers do care.

I can see solid reasons for going with a prequel this time. It opens up a new dimension where the character upgrades are more tangible and gruesome vs mere injections and such, and let's face it, their sequel Invisible Wars was pretty much a flop. Going with a prequel kinda wipes the slate clean and takes the series a whole new direction. Lets just hope they do it justice by going back in time. Invisible Wars took the game to a very watered down state. Generic, one size fits all ammo and such was not exactly conducive to intelligent, decisive gameplay. It was a total departure from the original.

No, I wasn't 'there' so to speak. I'm sort of in the same boat as FishOderAal, I've never really played the games and had a friend whom talked about it a lot.

Reading that really put a smile to my face. And Square Enix working on a FPS with RPG elements, this is weird... will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

Deus Ex 3???? I thought Deus Ex was dead! I absolutely LOVED the first game. Even though the graphics were pretty basic compared to today, it was AWESOME! The second was okay. But given the PC capabilities today, at least graphically it will rock!! I hope they splurged on writers!

Final Fantasy is a very specific game franchise if you ask me. Not all like it. But here, i think there is still some hope for true hardcore Deus Ex game coming back.
If done right, prequel is nothing bad. Personally, i'd prefer the era where original Deus Ex was happening. But then again, i have visited all the era's of FRP/FPS games.
Medieval with TES4:Oblivion, futuristic cyberpunk with System Shock 2, current era with a touch of future with original Deus Ex and back again to some fictional 50's with Bioshock. And i loved all the era's. Some more than others, but if they are done right, it doesn't really matter.
Would prefer to get a proper Deus Ex 2, not the Invisible War which was a huge step back in many areas. But some say it's still interesting to play once you get over the fact it's just not the good old Deus Ex 1. I have the original of both. Played the original countless times, haven't finished Deus Ex 2 yet...
