silent setup airflow question

Does anyone know if a dvd burner can get by without any airflow?

I am working on a custom case for submerging a computer in mineral oil. As it is right now the dvd drive is the only part that will not be under oil. I am trying to decide if I can get by without any airflow, or if I need to use an external player outside of the case. I don't want it to melt =)

I don't want to add a fan in just to cool the dvd drive because I think this would defeat the purpose and I might as well use regular hard drives out of the oil instead of a submerged SSD. But then it wouldn't be silent and would kinda defeat the purpose of my project.

Yea I think you're right. Do you know if you can install the OS with an external dvd drive? I've never done it that way.

Most PCs provide little to no airflow to Optical drives and they work for the most part. You will still get in trouble if;

1. The drive is crowded with hot components with no room to breathe - HDDs for example.
2. The drive is used in a fashion that it is constantly running in full spin mode (ripping or writing)

Optical drives for the most part are fairly inddifernt to heat, but then again people on this forum are known to push the boundaries.
