Very, very soon I'm going to order a new rig but since this is the first system I'm going to be cooling on H2O, I'm in dire need of some expert advice, which is where you guys come in ;-)
Here's some requirements for the setup:
Needs to cost less than 2500 euro's
Cooling potential for Core i7 920 at or above 4.2Ghz (provided a good chip)
Enclosure needs to be able to house 8 HDD's
Needs to be very, very quiet (near-silent when idle)
Liquid Cooling, I was thinking CPU + GFX
Extremely little or (preferably) NO casemodding required.
First of all, of course, I need to know if these are realistic expectations:
Can we fit everything into the case as I don't want an external rad
Are the 8HDD's going to give me heat issues (Was planning on using drive bays that fit 3*3,5" HDD into 2* 5.25" bays).
I'm fairly certain I can do this within the limits of the provided budget, but I can stretch it a bit if needed.
I've compiled a preliminary list of components, but I don't even know if everything will work good together (as far as the WC is concerned, I mean). Here's what I was thinking:
Case + Fans:
========
Silverstone Temjin Series TJ07B-W Black
Drive bays that house 3 disks each, occupying 2 optical bays
Noctua NF-P12 or Gentle Typhoon fans for the rad
Noctua NF-S12B FLX for the case fans
Liquid stuff:
========
TFC Xchanger 360 Triple or Quad Rad
For only CPU + GPU this may not be needed, but perhaps I can go for more silent fans if I put in more? Or am I totally wrong? Will it fit with the large PSU?
Apogee XT for socket 1366
GPU block for ATI 5870
EK?
Everything else:
==========
Asus P6T WS Professional
Need the PCI-X slot for my Areca controller
Intel Core i7 920 - D0 stepping
Corsair Dominator DDR3 3x 2GB 1600Mhz
Maybe 2 of these kits, but I hear this makes OC tougher?
6* Samsung HD103SJ - 1TB
Does anyone know if these are quiet?
2* WD Velociraptor 300GB
I own these already, not to be included in budget
Enermax REVOLUTION85+ 1050W
Asus BC-08B1ST 8x Blu-Ray drive
Some ATI 5870 card.
Recommendations on brands anyone?
Undecided - here's where I need some recommendations:
====================================
Pump
Was thinking the Laing DDC-1 MCP350, I've read reviews labelling it as quiet.
Reservoir
Like that inverse T-virus thing, but probably too new to be had in Europe for now
Fittings and tubing
Need a lot of help here, no idea what to go for and what fittings to choose for which tubing, etc., etc.
Some liquid
I'd like something pre-made, low-maintenance, either clear in white tubing or with a white UV dye.
I'm totally open to suggestion for everything here, so please, let me know what you think. Thanks!
You can go a 4*120 rad and a 2*120 rad in bottom of a TJ07. That should give you enough rad space with only one video card to undervolt your fans when idling.
Pre-mixes are not really "maintenance free" They can lead to gunking issues in your blocks, so you have to check on your loop and temps ever few weeks to make certain it's not happening. It has caused peoples comps to overheat and shut down.
Distilled water (or seems deionized works for you guys on other side of pond) and a peice of silver is a great way to go. It's cheap and there really isn't a risk of clogged blocks.
PrimoChill PRO LRT tubing is my choice. Pick your color and size isn't a concern on performance. Comp fittings if you want the bling and have the money.
For extra security, 7/16" tube on 1/2" barbs with some sort of hose clamp. That is about secure as you can get. It's also cheaper than Comp fittings.

I can't agree with millertime more! I have Primochill PRO LRT, 7/16"ID on 1/2" barbs... that is some seriously secure fitting there, heh. Also using distilled w/silver as my tubing is black and I don't care what color the coolant is.

i also have Velociraptor and they do make a whining noise when reading. But with the case close, you can't hear them. I have the samsung spinpoint for storage also on another machine, it's pretty quiet. But that is only one, compare to your 6.
I would look at Bitspower barbs...they make quality stuff

Wow I got this far "Core i7 920 at or above 4.2Ghz" and didn't read any more. Unless you're gonna hand pick a CPU you can't guarantee your overclock and making a statement like that makes you look like a total nub. Rofl. I think you need to do what everyone else does when they get into watercooling and read through a lot of this forum, instead of coming in here asking to be spoon fed the answers. Seriously.
Sorry but all the newbie kids do it and it really annoys me. There is a search function.

I'm still thinking on how to accomplish putting a fan controller in there. 3 of the hard drive bays I mentioned take up 6 optical bays + 1 for the BD-rom and it's full already.
I've seen build logs where someone was succesfull putting a triple rad in the bottom and he was still able to keep one of the 2 hard drive cages. This would be ideal but then again, I lose quite a lot of space to put the pump.
Would 2 in the bottom and 2 on top give me enough potential or better go 3 + 2?

Got it, so one piece of silver to keep vampires out. Do I still need to add biocide stuff then?

Checked out their tubing, looks good to me. Are compression fittings less prone to error installing them (and therefore safer)?
Also, as for the size, I think I'm going 3/8 ID - 5/8 OD as apparently these are what's most common around here.

True, I'm thinking of removing them from their 'Icepak' and mounting them in a noise-dampening cage as per SPCR recommendations

If you did read on you'd have noticed I'm not here to ask for oc'ing guidelines, but for liquid cooling advice. Provided I have a good chip, I just want to make sure the cooling wouldn't be an issue for the OC.
Oh, thanks for the -very- helpfull comment.
FP adjusted.

I have see that build log too. You have a few other options though.
A 360 and a 240 would be fine. You could mount the 360 in the bottom and the 240 up top. Also, if you had to, one rad could be mounted outside the case on the back of the case.
Another option is a MM case as they have alot of room and do not require any end user modifaction. They can get big though. http://www.mountainmods.com/
Silver is your biocide. I use iandh's killcoil, but any peice of .999% pure silver works.
Comp fittings are just for show. They are not necessarily safer or "noob" proof compared to regular barbs.
As far as tubing sizes go, it doesn't really matter. There is slightly more resistance in 3/8" ID tubing versus 1/2" ID tubing. 7/16" is right in the middle of the 2. It won't effect your temps at all though, so get which one you like the looks of better.
If your uncertain about sizes, you can order a ft of each size in cheaper tubing like what's found here. It will allow you to see what each sizes looks like without throwing away a bunch of money.

It may have not been worded the best, but it is useful advice.
You can't automatically expect to get over 4.2 on a I7 920.
It seems this poster did do some research before posting, but there have been a few that haven't. It's always a good idea to do your research first as there is alot involved in watercooling.
