3 heatpipe vs 4 heatpipe (S1283-S1284) AMD 965

I'm trying to decide on what cooler to use for my AMD x4 965. I'm contemplating on either the Xigmatel HDT-S1283 or the S1284.

I read something about the positioning of the hDT heatpipes and how "x" amount of heatpipes is better than "x" amount for quads. (I don't remember)

What do you guys think? Suggestions, recommendations.

While I'd like a Xiggy, I'm open to other things as well, but nothing more expensive than the HDT-S1284.

The xigmatek s1284 is shown to be worse at cooling in some reviews. However in such cases they are comparing then stock. Which is unfair when the s1284 fan operates at 1,500 rpm and the s1283 fan operates at 2,000 or 2,200 rpm.

The s1284 is better in my opinion as it combines the ability for good performance and silent operation. It should be able to handle you Phenom 965 till 1.55 volts. Which is the limit for voltage.

As for worry of the heatpipes connecting. I think the s1284 will have better contact as there is a thinner layer of aluminum between each heatpipe for structural integrity. This allows more heatpipes to make good contact on the die.

I built a rig for my parents with a PII 940 under that 1284. I put two low speed yate loon fans on it in push/pull and that box runs silent with load temps around 37C. Stock clocks and voltage, though, they use it for drawing architectural plans and store important stuff on it. Haven't tried overclocking using that HSF, I'm using a TRUE on my 940.

But I'd use 4 heatpipes, the only way 3 could possibly be better is on intel 45nm duals, those dies are small enough that the two outside heatpipes basically do nothing as they're too far from the die and hang off the sides of the IHS. But on a PII or an i7/i5, the die and IHS are pretty large and all 4 heatpipes can make good contact, so it's a no brainer which one to choose unless you just like the look of the black one through your case window.

Also, consider this one: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=215385. It's better than both xigmateks and is only $5 more than the 1284.
