Pot Design and Fabrication

Recently I made what I call a "Throw together pot" and it was what I say it was. I found some random copper and had a braze torch that I torched a base on, added dry ice and SHAMWOW! it cooled my cpu down to -78c.

But here is my question... So I have seen many beautiful pots that have been custom designed and fabricated by Duniek etc.. What is the program that people use? Is it free? My dad is pretty familiar with CAD and could help me with creating a pot and fabricating it, I just needed to know where to start.

Thanks

What CAD? Just a drawing on piece of paper (in my case).

Working with google sketchup. I really like this easy to use program!

Here are a few drawings I came up with as to what I would like to do

I do have a question though

So I plan on having a 2.36" diameter aluminum pot w/ a copper base. Here is my question... What is the best size neck for the base, and the design inside the base also?

Thank you

When designing a pot you want to achieve the following :

1 - temperature controlable to a degree
2 - no temperature swing
3 - keeping load, minimal temp dropping
---->enough mass presence in base that can be touch on lot's of places by the LN2/dryice

How to reach this? Wel it's tricky and i recommend you to make a customload tester. And see what it does when having a different structure base.
By my opinion the best design yet to date is team Japans design, and it's pretty simply a base with drilled holes.

ps, go square

Points 2 and 3 amount to the same thing, ability to hold temperatures. Basically, you need to balance mass with surface area. My favourite design does NOT have holes in the middle but rather solid copper. The added mass gives you a slower responding pot which holds temperature. If you want a much more responsive pot, which won't hold temperatures too well, have a look at Jason's old MousePots.
