Dehumidifier water?
Does anyone know if water from a dehumidifier would do as coolant with a silver coil in it as biocide?
I'm having difficulty getting distilled water in the UK without paying £3 a litre for it mail order. I could get deionized but that's "bad" for copper, isn't it?
I'm not a chemist and I've not tried it, just wondered if it was a poor idea, heh.

Deionized is used in the UK for waterloops. It's just fine.

That would be some pretty dirty water on a microscopic level I'm sure so I doubt that the silver would help much over time...

+1 I would use the deionized water.

Yeah it is. Haven't actually seen distilled water in the UK myself. Been using deionised water ever since I've been water cooling and never had a problem with it.

Proper distilled is rare as hen's teeth.
www.sortlifeout.co.uk carry it - but it's about £20 a gallon!
I use Halfords stuff for flushing, rinsing etc, and the final fill with distilled.

Dehumidifier water will be full of dust and bacteria, don't use it. Can't you guys get reverse osmosis drinking water? I've used it plenty of times and it works fine. It's not quite as pure as steam distilled but over 99% of the junk in the water will have been removed.

It's about time one of us put together a cheap design for making this stuff...surely it can't be so difficult......I heard people living out in the woods do it all the time

Ok, so dehumidifier water : bad juju.
I'm just stunned no-one sells it. Walmart sells gallon containers of it but clearly that's not been transferred to Asda
Will the deionized eat my radiator? It's a 120.4; I think the tanks are brass but the pipes are copper.

You'll be fine with de-ionized.

No. Deionized water is a bit misnomer. It would be better though of as demineralized water. Once it comes out of Cation/Anion unit it has the same ions it did when it went into it. In the unit the ions are exchanged causing the solids to drop out, when it comes out of the unit it's as safe as any other water. It just has VERY little solids left. Conductivity (amount of solids) of good demin water vs distilled is pretty much the same.
On the other hand if you tested the conductivity of dehumidifier water it would be off the chart HIGH containing all kinds of solids and crud.

It is funny that you can't find distilled in the UK when I can find it in Greece. However, I am using Water For Injection from any pharmacy store and I get it dirt cheap about 1 Euro per liter. It is actually many times distilled (8 I think) and I have never seen algae in it in my loops.

De-ionized will be fine.
If you run a search for distilled water here, you'll probably find a ton of threads ... it's a discussion that comes up at least once a month. It's interesting that distilled is so readily available in the US, but not in the UK. Wonder why??? I know one of the main reasons people in the US used to use distilled water was for steam irons - but can't believe that many people still iron their clothes!
Good luck with your project, rampton - and we'd love to see some pics or a work log!

Honestly can't see people buying distilled water just for their irons. We always just use tap water & iron is still going 5 yrs on. Well hubby irons, I always try to get stuff out the dryer in time, so it doesn't need ironing......I will always try and find something to wear that doesn't need ironing
Water quality in the UK is WAY better than here. When we 1st moved here we were on well water, everything smelt of sulphur Once we got city water I though great, no need for bottled water any longer. We both noticed the coffee tasting nasty, was about to complain to Costco, when a friend asked if we were using city water........need I say more?
What we get here in the US, labelled as distilled water is just the same as what you buy in the UK to fill your battery up. Actually, the UK stuff is probably purer

I think the question with the Halford's water is whether it is distilled or de-ionized (which will still work fine). If it's distilled, that's great.
Been thinking about this question of why we can buy distilled at stores so easily in the US. One thing I noticed is that it is virtually everywhere here in Phoenix, AZ, but I remember having a heck of a time finding it in South Florida (actually used battery/de-ionized water for my first build). Is it that there are many more people using humidifiers in the hot dry climate?
And following equinediver's point about water quality in the US vs UK, found this comment about Distilled Water Usage:
Quote:
|
Cooking is the most important distilled water use apart from drinking. Cooking which is done by distilled water is generally free from any harmful elements. Distilled water use is also recommended while making baby foods because babies are very sensitive to water borne diseases.
|
(No coffee yet, so apologies for my rambling - better used some of my distilled to make a fresh pot)

It is intriguing to me that the Pharmacies don't carry distilled water for just the reason shazza pointed out. Some babies need it (I needed it, my son needed it), so where would you go to get it in the UK. Here in Canada pretty much every Pharmacy carries it in at least 1 gallon jugs.
P.S. Never drink demin water. Stong acid and casutic is used for the regeneration of the beds. It does happen that a valve fails and dumps some caustic/acid into the water.
