4890 block so close to 5870

I just got done checking to see if my old heatkiller 4890 water blocks would fit my new 5870 cards. The 4 holes around gpu line up perfect but the 2 near end of blocks are just off enough where you cant get screws in.The block itself fit perfect over everything its to bad because I love Heatkiller blocks. I was thinking maybe I could drill the holes in cards just big enough to use the screws.

The contact points over the VRMs and memory line up perfect? The only concern about drilling the holes out are drilling into the water channel and causing a leak.

no you got it wrong dude, I am talking about making the holes on the card itself a little bit bigger so screws will line up.

Can do that, but you would void the warranty for sure.

dont touch that PCB with any drills, you run a very high risk of ruining it.

Probably best idea. I though Eddy said the EKs should be in stores within the next 2 weeks. If you can't wait, it seems the GPU only blocks with some of the sticker style heatsinks work too.

I am going to use my heatkiller water blocks after all for the gpu and memory coverage. If you are familiar with heatkiller for the 4890 it has a small piece thats held on by 3 screws. I am going to remove that piece and place heatsinks in its place. I bought 4 of the items below with some thermale tape.I paid to much for these water blocks just to have them lying around. Will have pictures as soon I installed them on 5870.

4 of them? one covers the VRMS :/ meh I think your not going to very satisfied with your results.. :/ your reason (they are expensive so dont want to buy new ones) is why people dont like FC waterblocks.. just get mcw-60 + full heatsink for the card(comes out in 2/3 weeks iirc) much cheaper as can keep the mcw for most cards and the sink is only $30 if that

I think gabe said that MCW60 was introduced back in 2002 and it still fits the new cards.

I wouldn't try making that old heatsink work. Just sell it and get some money out of it and get the GPU only heatsinks solution instead. You can't even be certain if the blocks will properly mount on the card and apply the proper pressure to the GPU and ram areas.
