Installing Heatkiller 3 on an EX58 UD5?

Hi, I will be installing this block onto my UD5 very soon, but I am unsure about how it should be fitted.

Do I have to rotate the block 90 degrees on this mobo?

As I have seen pics of some people having it installed like that, and I have also seen pics of others with it fitted in the normal position.

I checked it on my 2nd UD5 last night, and when it is seated the normal way it is very close to the caps beside the CPU socket, will this cause any adverse effects, or should it be safe enough to have it seated like this?

I really don't want to have to rotate it 90 degrees as I think it looks silly like that.

If someone could please explain to me if I have to rotate it or not it would be much appreciated.

Like I said though, I have seen some people with theirs fitted in the normal position on their UD5's..

Thanks in advance.

Mounting vertically you get about .5C better temps, but have to push caps out of way by slightly sliding block in place instead of pushing straight down. As for adverse effects, dont know for sure, but doubt. I got tired of having push caps out way each time reseated, and filed the bottom square edge round so does not hit caps now.

Mounting horizontally caps are not in the way at all.

Yeah, what rge said.

Although Watercool recommend rotating this block 90 deg on some mobos I mounted mine vertically (i.e. the normal orientation) by just "leaning" on the caps a little as vapor suggested. I get pretty good temps (65 deg C load max core, 4.2GHz, 1.3v Vcore) on my i7 D0. No ill effects that I am aware of.

If it's the same as the x58 UD3R then you may have to rotate it, I did on mine as my temps were jumping from 40-70 within seconds when I had it the right way up. Since rotating it I'm around 35 idle - 45 at load.

Brodel describes what happens if you mount vertical without pushing caps to side, you will be mounting on top of caps and not touching one side of IHS and get very erratic/high temps. So if you do mount vertical you have to push wb in place, like vapor posted somewhere, but a couple mm's to right then slight to left in place while pushing caps out of way.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I will fit it vertically, as I think it looks strange when rotated 90 degrees, i've checked it on my mobo, and by doing what you guys suggested it will work just fine.

It doesn't matter of the caps are touching the side of the block though, right?

Should hopefully be getting my bolts tomorrow so I can start thinking about how I am going to have my loop laid out in my case.

I have another question, do I have to use all of the plastic washers that are provided with the block?

I will be using the backplate that comes with those red platic riser things, so I am assuming I wont need to use plastic washers on the underside of the mobo, right?

Thanks again.
