Well I am in the need of 2 things to get my i7 rig up.
A power supply, which no idea when that's going to happen, and a heatsink/fan or a waterblock.
I've been sitting on an Apogee GT for some time and thought about making a support/brace for it to get it to fit onto an i7 board.
I just checked the swiftech site and it says there is an adapter, the AP-GT-CI7.
Now I haven't had any luck finding it, but figure if there is one, then I can make one.
My question is, how well will it cool the i7?
I will be running a 120x2 rad and if need be, I can add in an additional 120x1. (Both swiftech)
I was hoping to use the single for chipset and maybe video eventually, but if needed for the cpu, so be it. I don't really OC the video anyways.
So after all this rambling... 2 questions
Will the Apogee GT work (with an adapter) on the i7.
and
Does anyone have info on the AP-GT-CI7 that is listed on the swiftech site?
I could use it for a basis on making my own adapter.
Ok, figures... I got to reading a link on the site that I had yet to get to.
Seems this...
is the 'adapter'. Where actually they changed the hold down plate. :frown:
Not sure if I'll be able to do that... but might be able to make a plexi plate to cover the block entirely, as it is, to hold it down...
Well figuring from the adapter you can purchase through Swiftech and other sites, I decided to make my own adapter so I can be down to just 1 part needed on getting this blasted machine up.
So, a few shots of my handy work. Just done of the last couple of hours.
Not totally happy with it.
It is not very symmetrical, which does bug me and my low levels of OCD. Just a rough first draft.
Sorry for the low quality pics, about the best I can do with the camera I have.
At first I tried to replace the metal plate with the plexi sheet. Due to the plexi being nearly 3 times thicker than the metal, the screws wouldn't fit.
So, I made a few minor adjustments to the plexi and added in a few extra bolts to hold the plexi to the metal frame.
Which is what you can (more or less) see in the pics above.
Figured that for a rough draft first round shot, I don't think it went too bad. Minus clean-up it would work for sure.
As it sits, it is actually directly on top of the GT metal frame. So there is minimal strain on the plexi itself.
As for a backplate, odds are I will make one, again, of some sort of plexi.
Keep in mind, this is plexi that is about twice as thick as the norm. So it is pretty strong stuff IMO.
Anyone know the dimensions of the holes on the board for this?
I would lose the metal plate and either just use the plexi or make a new metal one based off the plexi dimensions. You could also do just a simple rectangle to add strength to the plexi.
I tried it with just the plexi and removing the plate. Only problem is, the plexi is too thick. I even dremeled out a bit where the screws would mount to the base. Must more than I did, and it would seriously start to compromise the strength of the plexi.
As for just using a metal plate, I don't have anything thick/strong enough that would work by itself and no funds to find any that might work.
It's possible for a smaller metal plate with the plexi, but then still run into the problem of the plexi being too thick on its own.
oh and i forgot i can provide u with the backplate of the GTZ's measurements .. 3 3/16" from center of hole to center of hole in a square if that helps.
and gtz uses 1/8 thumb screws to tighten down.
I don't know how much the difference is between the GT and the GTX but I can tell you the result of a GTX with the 1366 bracket. i7 920 @4518MHz 1.35V, GTX480 / 4x Scythe ultra kaze@2000rpm, 2x MCP665 and MCW30 gives me 40°C idle/75°C load with about 25°C room temperature.
CPU can go higher but last time I blew up mobo when going to 220bclk. But these old waterblocks are still viable options and I'm pretty sure I'll use it on the Gulftown too. They have more than enough contact with the IHS.
