Looking to upgrade from 939... needs critiqued please

Well guys after having my 939 for a few years i think its time to upgrade. I’ve been researching like mad trying to find a good combo that will produce some decent numbers and I think I found it. The components I am looking at getting is as follows:

-BIOSTAR TForce TF570SLI Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor 2.8GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADA5600CZBOX
-G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ

I wanted to check with the powers that be and make sure I’m on the right track with this build before I commit. I am trying to keep these 3 items under 400, so the wife doesn’t kill me. If you guys know of a better solution let me know.
Thanks

I don't think is worth it to upgrade from 939 to AM2 while Quad core processors at out.

Have a look at Intel E6600,they do over 50% overclocking,i never bought an Intel CPU in my life but this is the truth.

My opinion, wait until Quad core gets cheaper or wait for AMD Quad core to come out and then upgrade.

It's really nice reccomending Intel in an AMD thread
I would also wait until AMD's Quad come out, the prices will probably drop, if not at once, very soon after at the least. Cause that will cause competition with Intel, that now is non-excisting.

Hehe... I also wish you weren't right But we both agree on this, atleast wait until Barcelona is out! The prices will then drop again, goddamn Intel for making big bucks on NOT having competition!

Isn't long ago i upgrade my CPU(just over a month)from a single core 3800+ to Opty 185,so hopefully this will keep me quiet until AMDs Quad come out and get cheap enough to be able to buy it.

as for the quadcore's thats already in the works wife said as soon as they come out i can get one. that is IF they come out ...lol but unfortantly my ultra-d and 3800 x2 only likes bh-5 ram and i killed mine. plus this rig will be transfered to the wifes once the quads come out. im set on the ram and cpu but the board has been giving me issues as im trying to keep it under 400. plus the upgrade to 2g of memory would help in games. im just really tired of my ultra-d rebooting/bsod every 15 min with my backup tccd. ive spent the last week trying to get it stable but to no avail. i do appreciate the input guys. thanks alot. and yes i know right now for overclocking intel is the way to go but im a fan boy and always will be so its AMD for me.

Come to think of it, maybe that's why my UCCC based RAM won't run as well as I know they are supposed to do, get some BSODS, but with high level tweaking they atleast run for some time before freezing or locking up without the goddamn BSODS. What kind of manufacturer deliever bh-5 chips on their sticks for sure, I mean -> what RAM can I buy without having to gamble is it/is it not bh5? I'm really fed up with the rotten s939 action from UCCC.

mine were mushkin 3200 lvl 2 black finding bh-5 will be hard utt stuff is easy to come but but its not the same as real bh-5. my boards did ok with utt, tccd sucked with the exception of my 165 and it did ok with alot of tweaking but overall bh-5 has been the best to me. you best bet would be to put a want ad in the forum i know there were a few people with alot of it at one time might get lucky.

I think your choices are great, why wait enjoy now. Upgrade when quads are out.You could be waiting for awhile for quads, but who knows. Just e-bay your 939 stuff before it gets any older. It will give you a little money towards your new stuff.

With AMD's price cuts tomorrow and RAM prices how they are upgrading now may not be so bad of idea.

Come to think of it, maybe BH-5 is the best, but my board only goes to 3.2V on VDIMM, haven't really the need for an other mobo as this one was really stable. I can check out if there's a jumper mod for my board, but I strongly doubt that there is

why dont you put in a nice cheap opty until the amd quads (etc) come out.

i'm using one now and its pretty good as far as i am concerned.

i get 50+ fps in bf 2142 even with the x1950pro.

havent there just been pricedrops for all amd stuff (again)?

hz ram: yeah; 5600: yeah (if u must...)
sli mobo - don't do it.
AM2 boards will support new AMD quads i hear...but the newer AM2+ have some improvements in ht and pci-e...
one possibility:
opty 165/70 + 8800gts320 - keep yr mobo and ram...but your dfi ultra d might be getting a bit long in the tooth...

5600+am2 board +ddr2 - that's yr 400 bucks gone.
170 + 130 + 100dollar mobo....(dfi infinity?)

Not meaning to spoil the upgrade party, but has it occured to you that having problems with UCCC / TCCD IC's is NOT the motherboards fault? Now I presume you all know the following since were on XS but because youre having 15 minute BSOD's and youre set on blaming the motherboard I think it's safe to point out these probable causes:

1. bad memory (long memtest 5 & 8 and 12 hours prime)
2. the wrong BIOS for your type of mem (get 704-2bta for UCCC and TCCD)
3. bad timings (see 1)
4. too high clocks on the CPU and / or mem controller (see 1)
5. weak PSU (get a DMM)
6. software related (do fresh install)
7. orange slots (as in not the yellow ones)

etc. etc.

Ontopic: it seems that the 6000+ are insane clockers, haven't really been following the AMD section but there's a thread in here that has one on 3.3Ghz stock volts.

I should rephrase it, its probably not the mobo. its probably is the cpu. my 3200 cpu loves my tccd ram however once going dual core i will never go back.
1-Memory will pass memtest full runs for 3 days straight as i found this last weekend. prime however fails in about 15 min which it will promptly bsod after prime fail.

2- Bios-i've tried several including the 704 bios 6-23 seems to work best for any type of ram i put in however.

3- clocks- it was doing this at stock so clocks should not be an issue.

4-timings - i have went through these from the start however 15 min seems to be the max that i can get stable.

5-weak PSU- i have the power stream 600W and have tested the rails numerous times. and i will say this has been an awesome psu.

6-software- i've reinstalled many times and i have verified its not software with a friends ram.

7-slots-i have tried both orange and yellow without any success.

ive had this mobo for a long time now, and it has been good to me. its probably one of the best motherboards ive owned. however its really time to update. i have be able to revive my bh-5 by butchering a stick of 256Mb BH-5 i had. and low and behold even with the new bios (on latest from DFI) i was able to get it stable at 2.5ghz within 10 min in bios. primed for 24hours straight. so my rigs back up but i still want to upgrade. am2 is dirt cheap when you think about it and i will eventually have to move to ddr2. so why not do it now while i have a lil cash set aside.

i do appreciate all the input you guys have given me. on another note with AMD's price cuts im actually looking at the 6000+ for my cpu. but the dang mobo is kicking my butt. so many options out there and so little just rule the playing field.

im also looking at the biostar TF560 it has am2+ support which is a plus.

-BIOSTAR TForce TF570SLI Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

Thanks
I like your list of parts, been thinking about the same upgrade path. Check out my sig. If I had to change anything, it would be your mobo selection. I would recommend an ASUS 590 chipset board, but the Biostar would probably suit your needs.

At least there was an AMD price drop today.

I'd go for a 6000+ too, in 3 weeks I will get me one. The price is great at the moment.

Great choices, If you were going to OC you could probably get the 5400+ and you will probably hit the same wall (3.0-3.2ghz). I have that RAM and it is definately good. I'm running it at the rated speed and timings at 1.95v (rated 2.0-2.1v) solidly.

The $20 or so could go to a slightly better motherboard, but I've heard many good things about that board so I'd give it a shot if you were rather inclined to get it.

thanks again for the input guys.
i would rather stay away from asus seems like everyone ive owned and those that my friends have own has had some sort of issue last was a8n32-sli deluxe that would loose its mind if you changed anything.

from what im seeing about the ram its supposedly D9 chips which are supposed to be good clockers. as for the mobo im up to spend a lil more on a mobo if it is indeed a better choice.the biostars seem to be the better of the selections from what i can gather. got any recomendations?
