Stock Vapochill LS - noob questions

Tonight I test started the system with a stock Vapochill LS unit cooling the CPU (QX6700). CPU at stock speed.
I'm not using the LS case, I had everything moved inside a Lian Li V2000B Plus II case.

Everything went good, system posted right away, BIOS reported CPU temp -44 Celsius, evaporator temp -48 Celsius.

Here are my questions:

1. The compressor unit gets very hot. So hot that I couldn't keep my hand on it. That's after 1hr.
Is that normal? Is it dangerous for 24/7 work? Or is the compressor built in such manner to handle that heat?

2. Just as I wanted to turn off the system, I noticed the fans RPM (in all system) started to fluctuate (i could hear them speed up then decrease speed, very fast).
I watched the LS display and noticed the temp started to rise. Went from -48 Celsius up to -37 Celsius (took about 3 minutes). At that moment, the fans RPM normalized and the LS display showed that the temp was again decreasing. I watched it as it went down to -48 and stabilised there.
Was that a power line issue? Vapo issue? Or is it normal?

If that was a powerline issue, it will be fixed once I get the system home and power it through the UPS.

I don't know what the problem is, but I'd stay away from overclocking the quad and using a stock phase unit.

The stock units are known to die from the load of quad cores.

^agreed. these units were designed wayyy before quad cores were around and it's probably overheating from the high heatload

First, thanks for answering.
Yes, I am aware that some unfortunate users got their Mach GTs' and LSs' fried by the quad core, but that happened to me at stock speed on a brand new unit. FSB was set at 266, multiplier at 10. Could it overheat at stock speed? Is the compressor built to work at about 60 Celsius? Or is that too hot?
I exchanged some emails with a guy that's been keeping his quad at 4GHz on a stock LS for some months now and said that his unit is ok. No fried chips sound, no sign of weakness.

I'd wait to check with some of the more experienced Phase experts before doing anything. A stock Vapo should easily handle anything at stock volts. It's only when running at high volts for a long period that units are wearing out. That being said, something doesn't sound right about the fluctuating fans - It's possible there is a controller issue or maybe just a loose connection somewhere.

try putting a 120mm fan in front of the compresor and a 120mm fan behind the compressor in a push/pull configuration, more air-flow should help. compressors are ment to get hot, but it depends what gas yoru using. the cold gas coming from the suctionline is supposed to cool it, but if the quad core is dumping too much heat into the line it might not be cold enough to cool down the compressor. sorry thats a bummer. what would be the first thing to mod to make it better?

Single stage can manhandle quad at stock vcore. Its once you get above 1.5 or so that things start going awry, depending on what your unit is tuned for.

if you don't mind me asking, and this question is not ment to me hostile and sorry for me being ignorant, but arn't these like 900 bucks each? the vapochills and promaterias? why do people continue to buy them at such a high price when they are goign to spend an additional large sum of money to mod them? (askign a question, not being snotty...) do people not research before or something? btw, i love the watercooled gpu's, nb and sb. i might do the same one day...

Just as noob said people buy into marketing or simply impatient.

I tell all my customers that for bang for the buck custom is the only way, but side effect is it takes a bit longer to get the finnsihed product.

Chances are he scored his unit used, so non the less its a deal.

I too, am a newb.. I bought my Vapo LS today. I couldn't pass it up.. Although it was roughly $850 dollars, I only had to pay for HALF. Brand new. So, it seems since I am a quadcore owner, it sounds like I need to find someone to mod it for me, as I would like a 24/7 overclock @ 4ghz.

Or people also see the insulation on Vapochill or Mach, and go, o thats nice and easy, no hassles no mess. And then they trust that insualtion completely and kill hardware.
Ask Fragtek about that, and I don't mean in a sarcastic way, seriously ask him.

Mach's are cheaper to mod then Vapo's though, so expect the need for a new compressor to get better performance, possibly a SLHX or accumulator with capillary wrapping, and a new evap head even.

As long as your Discharge and Compressor casing don't exceed 225F the unit is with in manufacturer specs for operating conditions.
