AMD Upset Me I Need a new System

Good Day all and thanks for taking a look at my post.

AMD has POed me as I can't upgrade to an FX60 CPU. I was waiting for a decent price break point then BAM 939's are gone. Because I can't find one that has a reasonably price I'm switching to Intel after many years with AMD.
AMD made a big mistake in POing long time customers like me!

After reading posts here I'm looking at an Intel CPU and want to spend around $1500 for a MOBO, 2 Gigs RAM and kick ass CPU. I need lots of HD space so eight SATA ports ( a couple extra externals would be nice) and would like two EIDE ports (could get by with one) as I have 4 EIDE devices hooked up right now.
Which chipset is best right now? Oh and I love to tinker so OCing is a strong consideration.

I've got most of the parts I need except above and want room to upgrade my GPU sometime in the future. I'm not a big gamer but do lot's of CPU intestive mutitasking with Video editing, etc. Basically I'm a hacker

Thanks Peeps

nn_step, thanks for the links but I can't see using two 125w CPU's, especially will all the HD's I have hooked up.

"Why not just get a Opteron and overclock it ?" I wasn't aware they are the same as the FX 939 CPU! Now that sounds like it's worth some serious investigation until I go with a Quad core Intel !

If I'm not going to tolerate Intel in an AMD thread, what makes u think I'm going to tolerate AMD in a thread where the user SPECIFICALLY requested an intel build ?!??!

Posts Edited. Johnmark,

You added that u also need HD Space, that means that the $1500 will include cos of new HDs or existing HDs ?

From a generic pov, the average good mobo costs $200, 2gb ram the same, that means u have $1100 for a cpu, which means you'll prolly be getting this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115011

That leaves you ~$130....not enough for a gpu upgrade, other than if you chose an nvidia sli mobo, u can get another 7600GT in SLI.

After some research into the Opteron CPU it looks like a good CPU however it is still very pricey for the top line 185 model (around $500 US) due to AMD not making anymore and people having to pay stupid prices for old stock. Also AMD can take there lumps for screwing me around with the socket 939 fiasco, even their own site say's there is no real difference between the socket 939 and AM2 other than RAM it uses. Can you tell they have make a long time customer mad
I should mention I'm talking CND $, those are small U.S. $ so that make's a difference.
Also I do not need any more HD space, I just need the MB to have accept the Terrabyes I already have(as per my sig).
I've been an Asus kinda guy for a while but I see a lot of people using DFI here which I have no experience with.
So basically it's coming down to who has the best MB and RAM for OCing, and the remainder will dictate which Intel CPU I go with.
I like the idea of a second 7600GT as they are inexpensive and will provide some extra kick if needed. However I'll need to talk with the water cooling peeps to see how they are cooling two cards so close to each other.

I really appreciate all your help and insight!!

John

Here you go: www.directcanada.com

See if you can make a build with those prices and then show us a build that fits your budget (shipping included) AND that is at the performance level you want.

We'll take it from there.

I think you should get one of the best overclocking rams out thier instead mostly spending your money just on on your processor.

Not if real-world speed is your goal.

Faster RAM in current machines has very little impact on real-world applications.

After spending many hours looking around I'm still no further ahead
I was hoping to use the expertise here to help me whittle down my options.
Best bang for my buck is my goal, as I don't mind upgrading component's. It appears the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.40GHZ 1066FSB 4MB Retail $363CND, seems to meet that criteria. But is it the best for OCing?
After all this searching the bottom line which MOBO do you folks feel will provide the best stable OVERCLOCKING abilities (I'm water cooled) and provide the most options for HD storage. I must have 6-8 SATA connections, 2 EIDE (but I could buy an add in card for the extra EIDE).
I can fit the CPU and RAM, etc. afterwards, as it appears Intel is bringing on new CPU's that will be better suited for OCing?
So far it would appear that the Asus Striker Extreme would be the best MOBO, thoughts? Is the 680i chipset stable and the Asus BIOS?

Thanks for your consideration!

That depends how much you're going to OC If you're on watercooling then the E6600 would be a good choice and after the price drops the price will be decent. For the mobo I'd recommend Intel Bad Axe 2. It meet's your demands expect for the 2 ide connectors cos it only has one but as you said you can buy a 'add on card'.

"ASUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard"

Why would you choose this board over the striker, other than price? Just curious as the boards seem quite similar except for some bells and whistles, right?
I like the fact the striker has 2 eSata ports, as I also have one 500 gig eSata drive and a couple of USB's.

"Intel Bad Axe 2" doesn't" doesn't seem to offer as much as the Asus board's
especially if you don't use an extreme processor. Also ATI lost my business a couple of years ago, so crossfire(only) isn't an option.

Thank You for your input!

perkman, why edit a helpful post? jesus i sorta expected you to be a little more respectful, a forum change may have done the trick, but deleting a handful of posts? that helped the initial poster? uncalled for.

My intolerance on the issue comes from experience, its better to be firm when it comes to preferences, pls don't OT - Perkam
