Dice/ acetone mixture? What should I be looking for?

Played with DICE today for the first time and it was a blast..... I spent most of the time just learning and testing but without a thermometer its hard to figure out what actually gives the best temps...... So id like to ask what kind of texture ( dice/acetone) gives the best result? Is filling the whole tube with dice the best or have a watery mixture ( where its boiling) be better?.....

Does this look ok or do I have too much/too little acetone in there? Thanks

You shouldn't need to fill the pot up full, just make sure there is plenty in.

IIRC k|ngp|n said he found the best texture to be a slushy mixture. I think he said to keep mixing it too.

Yeah if you get the DI in blocks smash it into snow, more surface area Depending on the size of your tube the amount of acetone can be from 1oz to 1/2 cup, basically so the mix in the tube is slushy and around 2-3" deep. If you can get DI in rice form that works good too. Looking @ your 1M I'd say that tube works good and you have a very good 6600.

Thats what I try to keep mine looking like. You really dont need to continually add Acetone. I usually only use a little more than a shot worth for a whole bench session. Just keep it looking like that slush mix and add more DI when it starts to bubble like Blinds picture. Though dont add too much DI, just enough to keep it slushy. Ive also heard about doing a Acetone/rubbing alcohol mix.

Yeah he said you have to keep mixing it all the time for best temps.

If you get the dry-ice like G H Z said in "rice" form or "pellets" as they are often called it gives you more surface area. Do that and then add a small amount of acetone/ehanol and keep mixing .

I use enough Acetone to either just cover or just not cover the load mass in the centre of my pot... just over a shot worth. Keep stirring the mixture.

Slush works better because theres no gaps or pockets and contact will be better, although that way you`ll need to fill more often.

Dont fill the pot right up, not even 2 inches deep should do

(from the Dice benching ive done)

Thanks for the reply guys..... The first couple of hours I had the pot pretty much full off pellets and I kept putting acetone cos it seems like nothing was happening.... Then I started to crush the pellets so its like snow and I finally got it to actually boil..... So what I had was ok then I guess.....

Thanks.....The pot worked alright but I couldnt put too much voltage on my cpu cos it was heating up too much..... The sweetspot I guess is around 1.7v, at that voltage bios shows -57c at 1.84v it was up to -38c so I guess the pot could be better..... Im making a new one to see if I can improve.. here's the start of my next pot, I just need to figure out how to fill up the gap.... Dont know if Ill get better temps but its fun learning commets are always welcome ofcourse....

I would think that if youre going to be really only using DI then using that as a center pole type thing would not be a good idea, maybe for LN2. The pins are too close together to allow the DI, even in slush form, to really get all the way down and use the center poles to full use.

You'd probably have to crimp that pipe to make the gap small enough to braze. Apart from that the only other thing you could do is get another piece of copper cut out to extend the width of that square block.

Actually Im not liking this idea anymore but I still went ahead and did it anyways.... I used an endcap again and cut out the bottom, I soldered it together but it leaked when I tested it...... Ill try again tommorrw.....

I really want to make a decent base but copper is just stupid expensive here... Called Metal Supermarket today and they want $180 for a piece of 15mm x 2.25" diameter copper round..... lol...

Anyways, Im having fun trying to make a pot and I think Ive learned alot this last couple of weeks...... Damn this Conroe, I was just gonna aircool when I bought it and now look what happened lol......

Why not get some square copper tube or something? onlinemetals.com has square tubes I think, mcmaster.com should have them too. It doesn't have to be really big or anything, just like a few inches should be enough (onlinemetals sells custom cuts like that, just find what you want, and scroll down until you see the box that says "cut" or something). Their prices are horrible but that's the thing all the online vendors I've seen (for raw materials) share in common
