Alternative to Windows Live Messenger?

Are there any? It doesn't seem to want to work on my PC - it never connects.

So far I've found this: http://amsn-project.net/download.php

Any others you guys know about?

EDIT: Also, is it possible for me to create an ID where i don't sign up for a blasted hotmail account? I want to use my Gmail account to create my id.

Send a message via AIM to Omastar
aMSN is one of my favorites, and works on my Windows 2000 machine, unlike WLM or MSN.

But do any have all the features of windows live messenger, like offline messages and such?

The problem is is that MSN seems to ignore my active internet connection and keeps saying it can't reach the server. ZA is set to fully allow it, and I don't know what the problem is. I can connect so rarely that I've just about stopped using it now -_-

EDIT: Well, just tried aMSN. Don't like it one bit... it's so clunky and slow.
