Question Computer slows down during hd use?

Hi.

I don't know if this is the right forum, but i will try anyway

As the title shows, my computer slows down during hd use.
If i am playing any media, and starts copying large files or downloading
with fast speeds, the media playback slows downs/stutters.

I've got 3 Wester Digital Caviar disks, all SATA interface.

System specs:
Core 2 Duo E6400 @ 2.8Ghz
Corsair CM2X1024-6400 2GB
MSI 975X Power up edition
Sapphire X1900XT

Any advice?

olokai.

Check the SATA/IDE controller properties in Device Manager to make sure they are running in DMA mode. Also, make sure your drives are jumpered for the same speed as your motherboards SATA controller(SATA1.5 or SATA3.0). If your motherboard does SATA3.0 and your drives are only SATA1.5, that is fine(there would be no drive jumpers to set).

Agree, was going to mention DMA mode before the post even loaded. Is your CPU constantly chugging @ 100%? I just had this problem with my DVD drive the other day. Windows had changed it to PIO mode without warning and it was taking about 30 minutes to burn a DVD, while maxing out the system.

Here is what to look for:

If the current mode is anything other than DMA (likely PIO mode) set it to DMA if available, and restart. When you get back into Windows and it did not change, run this little script and it will fix you right up:

Thanks for the help guys!

My mp3s are now playing with no stuttering

I've uninstalled all my IDE contollers, and when windows installed them
again i got many new contollers, but it seems each hardrive is now in DMA mode.
