Is it WORTH it to buy an 88GTX now?

Right, so I've finally got my PC-7 modded with my rad in the top. I've got my 205bw hooked up to my lappy at the moment, and all I need are the system components.

But I can't buy it yet because I don't know if I should get the 88GTX now... it seems that on the very rapidly approching horizon there are better cards that might just be worth waiting for.

If you were in my shoes, would you purchase NOW or get a hold-me-over to see what the near future brings?

Thanks.

no, no point at all when R600 is around teh corner which will bring down the prices of 8800 series anyway... and then nvidia might (very big might) release an 8900 series.

So you reckon I should get a hold-me-over for the time being, something small and useful as a backup.

I've been seriously considering that option for a while now, actually.

If I was you I would spend as little amount of money as possible until at least April, when Nvidia will be releasing its mid and low range models. If you wait you'll be the winner in the longrun (cheaper 8800 series if it's rival - R600 - doesn't perform, and a possible refresh!)

Not to mention Core 2 price cuts on April 22.

Perhaps I will wait.

With R600 no where in sight I would say get a low end 8800 320mb and camp out for the R600

That's an idea I've been contemplating for a while as well.

I've made the same choice and I'm waiting on the face off between R600 and 8900. This point in time is too close to the next gen and price moderations.

imo

Rattle: Live in HK. No EVGA step up for me

Nah I wouldnt go for a GTX now. Get something mid-range and then step up to the 8900 series; like a GTS 320/640.

Edit: I didnt notice you are in HK, I guess your best chance might be to just wait it out at least till April..

Hell yes it's worth it, ive just installed mine, upgrade from a X1800XT 512mb, and iam amazed at the performance increase.

eXceededgoku R600 is right around the corner? It's 2-3 months away at least, who says we won't see another delay. I was waiting for it, but i couldn't be arsed to wait any longer.

You could always get the EvGA one and then use the step up program, if 8900 comes out. You can always ebay the 8800 if the new cards really are that much better, but i can't see it myself.

You won't be disapointed with a 8800GTX thats for sure!

the 8900 gts is only gonna be 128 bit, if thats true then its garbage you'd be better off with a 8800 320 gts only reason to wait would be for any price drops.

We don't have Zotac here.

I guess I could just get the 320 MB version and see how that lasts me. Not a bad idea really.

EDIT: Phelan, why are you selling your GTS' anyways?

Cause I have two, and really don't need SLI and I could seriously used the money.

No kidding, I've had far-more problems with Nvidia's drivers than I ever did with ATI.

I'm waiting for this reason (getting a E6700 or a xeon 3070 with much higher overclock potential than 6600).

I'm not sure when nvidia will release the 8900. Ati R600 is delayed until may and looks like a power hungry of unprecedented proportions But if it really comes out in may, then nvidia will release the 8900 GTX in may as well.

So, if u are not going to SLI, I would get the 8800 GTX now. If you are thight on budget wait end of april/may.

I'm talking now, and in the past (years ago), cumulatively.

The card runs fine, its the drivers that don't play nice.
