Very interesting! But I'm not sure I understand what they're saying is happening in the body. I think its just the way they worded it... I'm gonna reread this later. LOL

I've heard this as well... Something about the body being cheated into thinking it has absorbed sugar, and then over-compensating next time you ingest something sweet... Or something like that...
I haven't read this article, but in general it is common knowledge for a long time that Diet Sodas can make weight problems worse, at least for Americans.
The problem is that the artificial sweeteners in the Diet Soda grow your appetite. The real sugar lowers the appetite for the next minutes, the artificial sweeteners raise it directly after consumption.
The result is that you eat more. That's particularly bad for Americans because in America you generally have so large portions that you MUST NOT eat all of it - and in combination with Diet Soda you are pretty much guaranteed to finish it. If Europe it's a little better since you'd have to order more stuff to follow that urge.
Ignoring any actual physiological effects that actually occur - everyone I know (including myself) find it a lot easier to justify eating more food and bad food because they only drink diet soda.

This article doesn't say that diet sodas make people fat.
The article is not very good at all because it doesn't try to prove the causation, instead it just points to an obvious correlation.
This article just says that fat people tend to drink diet soda more. Obviously fat people drink diet soda cuz they're fat...
There might be something in the soda but that's yet to be proven and the more likely reason 4 these numbers is just cuz fat people think that diet soda will make them less fat.
There are obviously skinny people who drink diet soda but the percentage of fat people who drink it will obviously be more.
I see what I see, and you see what you see. I can't make you see what I see, but I can tell you what I see is not what you see. Truth is, we see what we want to see, and what we want to see is what those around us see. And what we don't see is... well, conspiracies.
i use sodium saccharine (sugarine) in tea and coffee to reduce my sugar intake...i believe it works. Sugar really makes me pile on the weight....well i think it's particularly the combination of carbs AND sugar that makes me pile on weight.
i am losing weight now by having less sugar less carbs and substituting more veges and fruit and green leafy stuff....
i still drink pepsi max which is like coke zero with artifiical sweetener (not much) too much soda or coffee will dehydrate your system.
Typical Fast Food: high carbs; high sugar; high salt; high in "transfats" (artificially solidified/preserved unsaturated fats) and animal fats = big fat porker....reduce any or all of these in moderation and you are bound to be better off if you are an ex fast food junkie like me....i still eat pizza hut once a week and i am still losing weight
i use aspartame (sugarine) in tea and coffee to reduce my sugar intake...i believe it works. Sugar really makes me pile on the weight....well i think it's particularly the combination of carbs AND sugar that makes me pile on weight.
Using artificial sweeteners in coffee or tea is MUCH better than in Diet Soda.
Because the warm drink with a lot of caffeine will suppress the appetite and therefore will make good for the appetite increase from the sweetener. Also, you probably drink tea or coffee mostly outside of meals, so even if the short-term increase in appetite occurs it wouldn't hurt as much as you can't just swallow more food instantly.
In Diet Soda with no or low caffeine (Diet Coke) and drank cold the full effect will be felt - and if you drink it during a meal you kill more of the meal than you should.
Whether real sugar makes you pile on weight or not is mostly a question of metabolism and of otherwise balanced diet. People who constantly or regularly starve themselves get every gram of sugar right onto their waistline. People with 3 good meals a day don't.
soorry;
it's actually sodium saccharine in sugarine...apparently its "healthier" or has less side effects than aspartame.
apparently pepsi max does contain aspartame...
yeah i only have two "meals" a day...breakfast of cereal and fruit and early dinner
sometimes i have a salad and cold cut sandwich at lunch if i need to or a piece of fruit/nuts.
and some fat dudes just have the metabolism to put on weight... so yeah i'm not disagreeing.
there is a middle ground between starving and overeating...i still have sugar (or honey) on cereal and in chocolate drinks sometimes. i do tend to "starve" myself a little to lose weight more quickly....but i mostly eat when im hungry and dont stop until i dont feel hungry anymore......overeating for me is mainly when i eat when im not hungry..... a stupid habit i sometimes fall into when sitting in front of the idiot box.(tv)
i knew a girl who was on a particular diet that consisted of (i dont know many "meals") basically eating all day but very small portions of 'good' food - balance from all food groups - the theory being that it keeps the metabolism and digestion active and burns more calories...anyway she lost weight...by having more than 3 good meals a day...but no doubt the same quantity just spread out more into more but smaller portions.
i think it was like 3 light meals with little healthy snacks in between.
I found having a job keeps you fit, as long as it's a job where you move around a lot... When I turned 15, I was ~7-8kgs overweight... I lost that in half-a-year because I got a job where I was pushing shopping-carts around (moving big stacks of them from our parking-lot back into the store)... Money + excercise = good
Aside from the fact that I'm not big on ingesting synthetic sweeteners, aspartame and things containing it taste like absolute TRASH. That horrid bitter, metallic aftertaste...I'll pass. Worst idea ever.
Ah, I get it now. Diet soda tastes like sh*t anyway. I don't even drink it. I've always avoided it like the plague.
