Cool How hot do step4 c2ds run?

Just moved from phase change to air on my 6700es step 4 conroe and I am pretty pissedoff at temps. The cpu is lapped to mirror finish and looks flawlessly flat to me. Using a skythe infinity and its crappy stock mounting system I get 52C on idle and 75 on load accoridng to core temp??? This is at 3.5ghz @ 1.425 volts (bios) 1.41 real voltmeter reading under load. I remounted it 3 times with the same results and each time I saw that the contact was perfect...

Right now I am thinking the ihs isnt attached properly but thats sort of bs since the idle temps would still be decent in that case. I was also getting a decent differencial between evap and cpu temps when using phase. Got 4ghz stable at 1.55 volts before. Chip has never seen positive temps. Stock clock air cooling temps are about 5c lower then oc on idle and load. TAT shows similar temps to coretemp. The mobo sensor is the most ridiculously wrong thing I have ever seen, shws like 9c under udle rofl. Ambient is about 15C. Any ideas?

I'm curious about this too, actually. Mine seems to be doing the same thing (sig). Anything above 1.40 VID, and It jumps to 60'C idle.

Hmm, under the same conditions, with my step5 (b1), coretemp seems to be pretty on par with a step6 b2 under the same conditions. Nice touch about peci. I didn't know what it was. Guess it's time to enable that in bios

edit: what kind of reading is peci supposed to give. I noticed with this p5b that with peci off, the cpu temp was reading higher than coretemp by about 10'c. Now with peci enabled, it's about 10'c lower than coretemp.

With my e6600 step 6 b2, at 2.4ghz default it idles 24C, 45C load

At 3.2ghz 1.3V, idles 33C, load 53C

At 3.6ghz 1.45V, idles 40C, load 60+

At 1.5V idles 45C+, load 70C+

This is with an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro.

That's really impressive with the ac freezer. Perhaps you have a pretty cool chip too. With my e6400 6b2 l630a, I got:

stock 2.13: idle 35 load 45
3.2 1.3v: idle 35 load 58 (c1e enabled, which explains better idle)
3.6 1.45v: idle 52 load 72
1.5v: idle 58 load 80

Those results were with a lapped ihs as well.

Got rid of the ac freezer when I got my b1.

Sorry to bring this topic ot op.

OP: How does the distribution of thermal paste look when you remove the heatsink? Maybe the base of the hsf is a little off?

My e6600 is "L632B086".

When I take off the heatsink, the paste looks thinly evenly distributed.

paste distribution is flawless. Lowered the voltage to 1.38 (real) and saw a 3c drop in temps. Also lost 100 mhz oc so not happy at all :/. Nothing too disproportional here. I am thinking maybe the heatpipes are dead at this point.

yep, still would like to show you guys this awesome screenshot. 0% cpu usage at that time as well. I love ES stuff. The asus probe thing shows some temps if the cpu isn't at 1.6 but they are still rather low.

funny thing, the idle temp is only 2C higher if I put the cpu at 3.5 @ 1.41 volts vs the current 1.6ghz and 0.8ish volts.

So there is NO way I could see my cpu temp at this point?

no such option in this bios. Bios 0078 is the only one that works with step4 chips that I am aware of. P5W DH deluxe is the mobo.

EDIT: Aha! Speedfan seems perfectly correct. Shows 20-21C on idle when cpu is at 1,6ghz and 0.8 volts, which seems perfectly spot on considering the ambient is 19 and cpu takes like what, sub 5 watts in this mode? Orthos small ftt load temp when at 3.5ghz and 1.4 volts is 49C. Also found out that coretemp/tat are always exactly 29-31 degrees higher then speedfan no matter what state the cpu is in. Thank god thats over.
