Permenant Damage?
Hey All.
Yesterday, I gave my brother and his friends use of my computer to play BF2 LAN. I went on it myself yesterday evening, and noticed it was artifacting pretty heavily, at texture edges, such as tree > ground border, which on this card, I have found to mean memory artis. I went on FEAR, to check a certain location that I have found particularly sensitive to memory artifacts, and sure enough, it was.
The scary thing is... it still does this at stock clocks. If one of my brothers friends did not notice the artifacts, and carried on playing regardless, could this have permenantly damaged the card in some way? ATi Tool seems to be artifact free, it is just games. Any advice?

What videocard do you have? Sounds like Palit 7900GS.
PS=: Ati Tools is sucks for testing for artifacts.

its all in the sig, but it is a Gainward 7900GT. It was clocked at 560/810 when they were playing on it yesterday, but it now does it at the stock 450/660.

Ok, I see it in profile. So congrats, you`ve kill the memory. So what is your cooling? What is your vmem voltage? If it is more than 1.9v - try to do voltmod to get 1.8v (after some time memoru frequency can rise)/ Try Alt+Tab when you play some 3D/ apply acept 3 buffering (ssory, I dont know how it in english)/ Set timmings from datasheet / apply PEG root control. So smth from this tweaks should help. Good luck. But it wouldnt help - just change video in shop.

Looks like crap, I did the same to my old Radeon 9200 SE... Ran at it's absolute max, then started artifacting like crazy, on stock as well. Can you get it replaced?

I don't understand, can playing at insane settings damage the card so badly in such a short interval of time?

Im very sure that this is the "7900GT issue". It can come at the same day you put the card in or after several weeks.

If u havent done any vmods or anything then it shuldent be any problem for you to RMA it and get a new one.

no, no voltmods. I will try and get it replaced then. I'll wait until tomorrow and then make some phone calls.
heh, never realised how hard it is to get a picture of an artifact, but I managed to capture one:
they flash and sort of "move" along edges between textures, like in the SS.

The Samsung chips had the problem you experienced, I believe the Hynix chips are more stable but OC less.
I had the same problem with my 7900GT the samsung clocked 900, but started to artifact a month later.
My replacement had Hynix and only would clock 600... i ebay;d it

they are 660MHz stock?!?
I think the replacement will be another lot of samsung. I am not even sure if the caps have all been changed to the black ones or not, all the pictures I have seen of it all have some mint coloured caps. Oh well, just have to see. If it breaks again I can always RMA it again I suppose....
