Unhappy Office 2007 memory tester: sorting out the men from the boys

Office 2007 comes with a set of diagnostics that includes a memory tester.

Although my Abit AW9Pro (1.5 bios), E6600 and OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 Platinum Revision 2 Dual Channel memory worked quite happily running Pi and the Sandra burn-in programs at 400MHz 2:3, 2V + SPD settings, it froze when running the apparently more demanding Office memory test. Setting the memory back to 272MHz 1:1 seems to be OK.

Having said that, the Orthos Beta still kills the system.

I have not tried the Vista memory tester which is, I suspect more demanding still.

I have just been using the tools that I have to hand. There seem to be quite a few versions of memtest kicking around and I don't want the risk of viruses. Happy to be pointed at a known good version.

DOS memtest is no good anymore, it doesnt really stress 2gb ram or DDR2 very much

maybe the memtest86 from memtest86.com the one from memtest86.org works well enough for me (1.65 is the latest version)

Am I out of the loop or something?

I load it up and check for 24hrs+ for errors most of the time glaring errors (bios settings) show up in just one pass.

with regards to downloading from trustworthy sites, I use
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/257 and techpowerup in general

Here is 1.65's changelog
*** Enhancements in v1.65 : ***

Memtest is good, but you can't put your memory controller ( Integrated or not ) on full stress with it.

[ remember the 2GB DDR1 Kits being stable in memtest, but not 3D stable in Windows ? ]
