Merom T7600
This will be the 2.33 ghz 4MB L2 part, right?
I don't own a Conroe system, but how does it shape up against an Opteron 165 @ 2.8?
I am looking to upgrade my laptop - I got the 1.66 Yonah so I could upgrade to 2.33 Merom when they came out, and am wondering how it compares to my sister's desktop.
Thanks
Cedric

Just hearing that has me giddy for an early Merom release.

Anandtech has a nice review on the Memron CPUs, though the gaming tests seem GPU limited:

While I've lurked quite a bit around the XS forums, I've found almost no information at all on Merom for the laptop.
From what I'm seeing, some ES of Merom are currently available to certain people and may be for sale to those with 100+ posts?
If one was planning to buy a laptop, would it be very possible to buy a barebones (such as the Asus S96j) and stick the Merom in it? How would its performance differ from that of say an e6600?
Is it possible to overclock on a laptop?
Seems to me that although it wouldn't be able to match a Conroe, it would still stay very competitive?
Any help would be appreciated.

Well I don't plan to overclock too much because I am putting it in my lappy. Just going to swap it with my Yonah.

Once in a while you will see a Merom on sale on ebay but its rare to see them.
Also I've wondered if part of the reason people hit the FSB wall on Yonah/Merom may be due to straps. I don't know, just I read an article about the different fsb straps that Intel chipsets have. Seeing that the Aopen board can only work at 166 setting clockable up to 199 FSB before you need to remove the two pins to have it work at 200+ FSB, made me wonder if there were only two strap modes available on the Aopen board. Which would eventually hit a limit for the chipset (where the strap modes are controlled) due to being chipset being too overclocked. (But somehow this might not be the case since I remember reading about people putting more volts for the chipset but it did not help)
Granted I don't know a whole lot about straps, but its just something I wonder about. As for the straps article its on OCZ's forums, makes a good read.

I think the reason is the lower power transistors, my Yonah only does 238x13 on air, and I cant imagine that is limiting the chipset at all with it a 975.

if I am not mistaken, isn't merom on a diferent socket, socket P, or is that just the later renditions?
if merom is on s775... higher multi here i come...
also, make sure there is chipset support before anything.
to put this all into contrast, yonah is on par with k8 on clock/clock performance, maybe marginally behind, but nothing beyond negligeability. Merom is supposed to be about 20% mroe powerful perclock as comapred to yonah... 2.0GHz Merom therefore should be compareable to an x2 4600/4800+

The first generation (batch) of Meroms shall be compatible with current NAPA(sp?) platforms that are currently used by Core Duos (Yonahs) in notebooks. Therefore, theoretically, with a simple bios update, you should be able to simply take out the Yonah and drop the Merom in and have it run perfectly.
