Xtreme Broken!!!! i7 IHS Removal, Have You Done It?

Decided to pop the IHS on my 950 & fubared it....

I have popped the IHS on loads of chips & never broke a chip yet but once I cleaned up the core I noticed a hairline crack across the core. I popped it in the board without a heat sink & gave it some power monitoring the temp with a laser temp probe & as she hit 50oC it smoked so I never got to run it.

My question is how many people have cracked i7 cores removing the IHS & if you were successful has your chip lasted after removing it?

Seen & read that thread before doing it, I think there's one i7 in there that's IHS has been removed & is alive.

I've removed heaps of soldered IHS's & never had a problem with a broken/cracked core so I just want to know if it was just bad luck or common for the i7 hence the question.

BTW If i can find enough people to chip into this thread & my dead chip is put down to bad luck I'll try again on another chip.

it runned for a few times, but i think i scrap the die when mounting it last time i tried running it it didn't work, i still have it somewhere

ihs have not ben removed but sanded down, cpu was popping bsod left and right before i did it anyway

Thanks for the input, its interesting one guy "Aerou" believes the IHS thinned down is more efficient than totally removed for running on air.

The bad part about the whole thing, apart from losing warranty, is that you can't use the cpu hold-down retention anymore. If you have the need to do it, I would suggest to lap an IHS to make it more even and have a better contact, but only to the point where you can still use the original retention.

And yes, a 1.5mm thick IHS gave me 1-2 degrees better temps than being IHS-less.

Having done the whole thing (btw that cpu died recently, probably because of a bad mount - this wouldn't happen to a unmodded CPU !!! ), I advise against it. Save your cpu, money, warranty, time and pain.

The TIM between the die and IHS is very good, it allows the heat to buffer into the IHS. Apart from that, it treats the problem of hot-spots in a cpu and allows the cooler to have a larger area of contact for heat transfer ( better utilization of heat-pipes).

Great, this was my plan for the 950 first I was going to compare air temps to see what removing the IHS got me then it was going cold...

Did you make any temp comparisons with & without IHS?

The temps will be worse unless you use direct die water cooling.

didn't compare it because I bought it like this.
compared to other w3520 it's worser with watercooling but better with phase.

that made me think

the aftermarket waterblocks are designed for the big heatsink, not this "little" die, IMO you'd need a custom block to focus the cooling on the die only to have effective cooling
