Sony QuadSSD (from new VAIO Z) bench?

The single G2 160GB outperforms the Quad SSD in the AS SSD Benchmark.

Nothing really useful there I donno how to interpret the ASSSD results - could be good random, could be good seq.
I don't expect them to be faster than X25-M, but close to that is enough. It is not possible to put both an SSD (mine) and a DVD/BD in VAIO Z, so I am looking inot the possibility of using its QuadSSD instead.

Generally the Samsung drives are good at sequential and bad at random.

Based on the ATTO results I'd say that this is the case for the QuadSSD as well.

It looks like a neat laptop imho.
I'm about to buy a new one myself, I'm torn between the Dell Precision M4500 and the Lenovo W510, Sony is not really an option in Norway.

Sony is not an option most places 'xcept US and UK And that's where I plan on getting one.
Again, I am not worried if it's not better than Intel even though it's quad SSD. But I don't need X25-E/M random speeds in a laptop, so I can live with a bit less.
The pricing is not bad for a 512GB baby, IMO.

Sony Z11, current series, uses proprietry port replicator connector. Not possible to use after market SSD. Older, Z790 and Z890 series with 5-7K RPM HD drives are much cheaper and HD can later be replaced with IntelX25 or any other SSD. You also get TRIM that is currantly not possible on Z11 due to raid. If you do not need Core i5 or i7, go with discounted old model from sony store

It looks like a viable SSD. Not as good as X25 maybe but not far from it.

It's not only viable performance, it's decent.
400+ MB/s read, 300+ MB/s write, good IOPS @ QD 1, and 50K IOPS @ QD 32.
Going by the numbers, the Quad SSD setup would outperform a single x25-M, and maybe 2R0 x25-M dependent on usage pattern. For being a laptop, it's definitivly high end.

I don't think you can even have anything faster in a laptop. Most laptops have completely gimped storage controllers so even if you put a good SSD in, you will get crappy performance (relative to a desktop controller such as ICH10).

You COULD get better IRL performance with 2x SandForce in a laptop with 2 2,5" drivebays running at desktop-equivalent specs. 90% of all laptops will never be able to beat the sequential numbers here, and likely not for most real usage cases either.

Of cause, you could make a custom PCIe SSD to fit the same slots as mobile graphics cards and use the integrated one for graphics, and get 1-2GB/s+ and 100K+ IOPS. Not that it would matter much for even enthusiasts. That kind of storage performance in a laptop would be serious overkill for anything you would (or could) use a laptop for.

yes they lock the sata ports to sata I speeds even on sata II motherboards as a power saving measure. you can get hacked bios's that unlock the sata II functionality for some laptops, but they are hard to find. like me with my dell im screwed LOL. there is no fix. some lappys even have an option to unlock it in the bios if you are lucky. the main thing you are gaining is access time improvement which is still a helluva deal. the drive looks great !

Seriously, I don't see what I would use higher seq. speeds on a laptop for - unless I have USB3 card and a USB3 SSD
Even then I think I would not be able to saturate it.

This speed seems quite fine. And the QuadSSD itself is not priced badly. One Sony Z coming up...

Are there laptop controllers that do not suck latency wise? So far everything I have seen on laptops adds a ton of overhead. We are talking 0.25ms++ latencies.

My laptop, a Compal FL90 from 2007 (originally roughly $1300 at the time) wich i upgraded with a Vertex 30GB, manages numbers roughly equal to Vertex 30GB off ICH10R. It has a ICH7M chip, and full SATA II speed with AHCI support.
I would guess low-end craptops are another situation, but most $1500+ laptops i've seen the pas couple of years come with full SATA II speed and AHCI.

0,28ms isn't that much for Barefoot when you're running everything at stock.
If you get 20MB/s @ 4KB QD 1, and roughly 60MB/s at QD 32, you're off OK.

BTW, i see you also did a short run on ATTO, could you do a longer run (1GB) in ATTO with the new firmware?

8MB/s 4k Q1 for me. It should be around 0.10ms and 20mb/s 4k q. The SSD is fine, I know this is my laptop doing this. I have turned on every performance option possible and nothing makes it better.
