Asus EAH5870 reference design @ 1400 MHz GPU

Seems like many vendors are bringing their own special designed ATI Radeon HD 5870 cards to market very shortly. I've been testing Asus EAH5870 graphics card based on reference design without any mods and it can do 1400 MHz on GPU in Vantage with LN2 cooling:

This run was done at -100 Celsius and 1,55V vGPU. Memory is at max from CCC.

Based on this result, we should expect minimum 1,4 GHz results on GPU from 5870 special designs with LN2 cooling.

Nice.... 1400MHz is awesome... so Lightning, Matrix and SOC have to clock very well... but I think they will do

Not at all easy to find a reference card capable of 1400 in Vantage...even less so when paired with such memory clocks. Definitely quite an achievement.

In the end of the day it all comes down to the chip ( as long as the power supply circuit is adequate ).
Unless the Lightning / SOC manages to bench crazy high like 1500 GPU 1450 MEM, I'd consider the PWMs an overkill.
The fact that a mildly pimped ( modded ) reference card can get pretty close to ( or actually get ) 1400MHz through Vantage supports my opinion
Look at the 2 reference cards Deanzo played with ( congrats mate btw ), Sampsa's, Stummerwinter's, and co.

I think you're almost right, BZ. You will need to go through a lot of reference cards to find samples that can do close to the custom PCBs. From what I've seen so far, it seems that both the MSI and the Gigabyte cards offer a higher constant in overclockability ... and in the end, it's those last 50MHz that count, right?

    Right off my mouth Pieter
If the Lightning / SOC show a good average LN2 OC in the retail market, then every competitive overclocker must go for one ( or more )

Well, massman said "beyond 1500 will be reality" so lets see how easy it will be to find R5870 Lightning capable of doing that

Anyway, I'm looking forward to push this card even higher especially on memory clocks. Lets see if there is more left.

I don't want to be a party crasher, but what you really wanted to say was "every competitive overclocker must go for one untill the end of march"

You are a party pooper Monstru
There must be a reason for the "delay"... they're waiting for Fermi ( LOL j/k ) or they're doing what I said was kind of possible back in January, binning cores themselves.

No, bro, just wait two months more. And then another two months. And then three months.

Thinking about it, overclocking is such a waste of money

    Then again ... it's fun!

At what point do you guys think the cap mod becomes worth it? I've seen no sign of droop at all under water.... when does it start to affect clocks?
