    PII 720 specifics

    Guys,

I'm befuddled by our new toy. I read all these dopey reviews by the usual suspects, and sure enough, they all struggle to get to 3.6 or 3.7Ghz with giant voltages (1.5 etc)

I can get to 3.7 on stock voltage (at least I think its stock...1.325)

I can't find any reference on AMDs site for stock voltage.

wow sounds like you have a nice chip. does the 4th core unlock? is the 3.7 stable? looks like the stable clock for me with stock voltage is 3.3 also. working on 3.55 right now, 1.45 volts. couldnt seem to get 3.6 stable for longer than an hour or so on occt or prime, no matter what voltage i pumped to it. 4th core is a no go for me also.

i could get to 3.6ghz @ +0.15v. currently running @ 3.4ghz @ 1.425v but those are with 4th core unlock. still considering should i run 3.2ghz at stock volts or not. i'll put up my power meter to see how much wattage difference soon.

Man, I have a random NewEgg special and am already @ 3.9ghz with 1.47v. I used 1.35v for 3.6ghz. 1.325 (stock) 3.4ghz. 3.8ghz was highest on air. The review sites I checked had mostly Rev C1. Maybe the AM3 boards do better . This has been my best purchase so far. Cheap and OC's well and the AM3 bundle has been nice so far. I just love the RAM speeds. I know the "Prime Fail" some sites had I have also. Doesn't matter if stock or OC'd. But everything else flows just fine. I don't know why either. MemTest passes fine too.

theres no way you got 3.7ghz on 1.325V. and if you did you have an amazing chip and id throw some ln2 on that thing. i have heard so much about how great these 720s are even before the 4th core unlock thing was announced. if i didn't already have my 940 i might of gotten one of those.

I dunno I had no problem with prime, I think 3840 was max prime on a cheap cooler,Its been sitting in a box though since the saturdays event, been to busy to use it. We caught it idling at 4.2 on good air on video.

Why is there no way? Also there is a good reason why that core is disabled you may seriously jeopardize that chip by trying to manipulate the inactive core.

According to AOD, thats what it does. According to Everest, the voltage is somewhat higher, which is why I started this thread. I have NO idea which is correct. The Asus M3A79-T has always had weird voltage readings anyway, so I really don't know what the real story is.

BIOS says 1.4V, but that is bone stock, without setting anything, so I don't know which is correct, Asus or AOD. Either way, its stellar performance... I NEVER break 28C either, even when all cores are grinding away with AOD or Everest stability test

I'll post some pics in a bit. Reloading Vista 64 atm.....

if your small fft stable the cpu core is stable, if your large fft stable your memory,NB/IMC is stable.......

Etc if your failing blend on large fft's its memory, memory controller or NB speed. Try raising NB Vid it helps to stabilize memory/memory controller.

Thanks Chewmeister. Right now, its stable as a rock at 3.6 on what I believe is stock voltage (I didn't change anything in BIOS at all, just the multi to 18).

is 1.45v enough to stabilize the NB, i always undervolt it to 1.20v or stock (1.25v) due to high chipset temp. will try higher volt when i have the time. thx for the guide.

Nah... my 4th core won't boot. It unlocks, but it BSODs if I have ACC enabled. Runs like a champ at 3.6-3.7 with three cores though, which is totally fine for me.

I was playing Fallout 3 all day, and it is much much smoother than with the 9850 I had been playing with (@ 3.2Ghz).

Really like this CPU so far. Dramatic improvement for sure

    3.6GHz @ stock volt is simply awesome mate, i managed a 3.6GHz with 1.42v...

still working hard to stabilize the 4th core but so far it's only 3d benchable.

I have to agree, this chip is perfectly fine at 3cores. Lower cost and clock great. Plus I like the DDR3 I am playing with 1800mhz on my Kingstons as we speak.
