New Intel Q9450 (2.66Ghz) CPU Idle Temp Equiry

    Hey there guys,

Today I managed to get my hands on a new Intel Q9450 and upgraded from my old Q6600.

I'm a little concerned at the idle temp of my Q9450.

I'm using a Zalman 9700NT pure copper cooler my average idle temp for my Q6600 running at a stock speed of 2.4Ghz was ranging from 30 to 34.

I assumed with the Q9450 that considering that it is based on 45nm wafer that it would run cooler therefore my idle temps would be lower that what I was achieving with my Q6600 but my current idle temp for the Q9450 ranges from 38 to 40.

Does this sound about right to you guys?

    I would appreciate any feedback.

they are supposed to idle hotter the die shrink makes them put out less heat but the smaller die holds its heat better

Nope, that's normal. My Xeon X3350 is idling at 41-45C at 3.80GHz, but it's only loading at most 65C. Video converting, listening to music, etc, only maxes out at 50C, by the way.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Here I am thinking that I was running into some issues.

Just because my Q6600 ran cooler, I just assumed that the Q9450, would have been on par or even cooler than the Q6600 because of the fact it requires less voltage to run.

    Max Clocks?

How flexible is it? Does it clock as well as the Q6600 does?

When you try Real Temp, try setting the Idle Temperature Calibration to "--" or "-". My chip has to be at "--" for the real temperature to show (already measured). It's actually idling at 21C - 25C and loading at 55-60C maximum on air at 3.80GHz, 1.32v vCore.
If you don't have anything to measure the temperature, you can try undervolting and underclocking your processor as much as you can, then go in and see if Real Temp or any other proggy reads the right idle temp then. Typically... at 1.08v, you shouldn't even see anything above 30c.
